Apple Facing European Investigation Over iPhone Pricing

Published on:

?European regulators are investigating whether Apple has broken anti-trust regulations in how it sets contracts with local mobile network operators.

Citing a person briefed on the issue, the NY Times reported that regulators have requested submissions from each of the European networks to see if Apple is behaving in an anti-competitive manner.

The accusations are currently focused on Apple's contracts with French networks, though other countries may also be involved.

The European Commission has confirmed that it is carrying out a preliminary investigation, but does not usually act until it receives a formal complaint.

The lack of variability in the retail prices of Apple products sold by different retailers and mobile networks has raised concerns in the past about how Apple appears to be controlling how its products are sold. That could be seen as anti-competitive if the company can be shown to have pressured retailers to adhere to fixed prices and promotions.

An Apple spokeswoman, Natalie Kerris, said, "Our contracts fully comply with local laws wherever we do business, including the E.U."
