Vettel wins 3rd straight F1 title in Brazil

SAO PAULO (AP) ? Sebastian Vettel captured his third straight Formula One championship title Sunday, overcoming a first-lap crash to finish sixth in a Brazilian Grand Prix won by Jenson Button under pouring rain.

"It's difficult to find the right words," said Vettel, who at 25 became the youngest three-time champion in F1. "It's unbelievable. I'm still full of adrenaline. It was an incredible race."

Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, F1's most successful driver, finished seventh in his final race after 19 seasons. Minutes before the race, he lapped the track with a flag with the words "Thank You." He used the radio to thank the mechanics and engineers he has worked with as well as his fans watching on TV.

Vettel appeared in big trouble after he was bumped shortly after the first lap and spun. He dropped to last place before he could turn his car around and start a difficult pursuit. But he steadily worked his way up the field and did what he had to ? holding off Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, the only other driver contending for the title.

"You are the man, you are a triple world champion," a team official told Vettel on the radio after he crossed the line.

Vettel is the first driver with three titles in a row since Schumacher won five straight from 2000-04. The only other driver to win at least three consecutive championships was Juan Manuel Fangio from 1954-57.

He needed to finish fourth or better to clinch the title regardless of where Alonso crossed the line. The Spaniard would only have a chance by finishing on the podium.

Alonso had a superb start on a hectic first lap at Interlagos and finished second, but that wasn't enough to erase Vettel's 13-point lead in the standings.

Alonso's Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa was third in front of his home crowd, and cried on the podium after finishing a difficult season on a high note.

Lewis Hamilton was leading in his final race with McLaren when Nico Hulkenberg crashed into him while trying to pass on a slippery track with 17 laps to go. Hamilton received a standing ovation from his McLaren team when returning to the garage.

"Mixed emotions, but I'm happy," he said.

The race was dramatic from the start but had an anticlimactic finish behind the safety car after Paul Di Resta crashed just before the final lap.

It rained on and off throughout the race at Interlagos, making conditions difficult and forcing drivers to come in and out of the pits several times.

"It was more or less was what we wanted, mixed conditions," Alonso said. "But it was one of the most difficult races we ever drove. You feel you are with the wrong tire on every lap. It was a risk to crash and have an accident on every lap. Obviously you are not in control of what your rivals do. We were hoping for a little miracle."

It was dry at the start, but it was a chaotic first lap, and a perfect one for Alonso.

The Spaniard moved from seventh to fifth after the first corner, while Vettel dropped from fourth to seventh. Vettel then was hit from behind by the Williams of Bruno Senna and spun at the end of the back straight, dropping to last place after sitting backward on the track with several cars having to go around him.

Moments later, Alonso passed Massa and Vettel's Red Bull teammate Mark Webber at the same time to move to third. Had they stayed in those positions, Alonso would have won the title.

But the Spaniard lost a position after locking his front tire and briefly running off the track at the first corner. Vettel ? without significant damage to his car ? began making his way back to the front, easily passing the slower cars near the end of the pack. He was already sixth by lap 15.

Alonso was fourth and Vettel fifth when the safety car was deployed for debris on the track eight laps later. Vettel then dropped to seventh at the halfway point of the 71-lap race, which still would have been good enough to defend his lead and clinch the title.

Alonso briefly had the title in his hands again after more rain fell with 14 laps to go. Red Bull lost time while putting the wet tires on Vettel's car, dropping him to 11th place while Alonso moved into third. But after all cars pitted, Vettel was in sixth place, enough to keep the title. Alonso moved to second after passing Massa, but he needed Vettel to drop a few more spots.

Hamilton started from the pole and kept his spot for a few laps before being overtaken by teammate Button on the sixth lap, and Hulkenberg got past the British driver on Lap 18.

Hamilton, who will replace Schumacher at Mercedes next season, retook the lead with 22 laps to go, but was hit by Hulkenberg when the Force India driver came in too hard to make the pass. Hulkenberg was eventually penalized.

The 43-year-old Schumacher is retiring for the second time after struggling in his return with Mercedes. He had ended his career after the 2006 season and managed only one podium finish after retuning in 2010, at the European GP in July.

Schumacher is leaving F1 with numbers unmatched by any other driver. He retires with the most wins (91), pole positions (68), fastest laps (77) and most podium finishes (155).

Why is Ehud Barak is leaving Israeli politics?

Ehud Barak, Israel's defense minister, shocked many with his announcement Monday that he's leaving politics. Barak was seen as a moderating influence in Benjamin Netanyahu's government.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak shook up the Israeli political system Monday with the abrupt announcement that he is quitting politics. The defense minister made the surprise announcement even after polls showed his breakaway Independence Party gaining momentum after Israel's recent military offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Barak, Israel's most-decorated soldier and one-time prime minister, said he would stay on in his current post until a new government is formed following the Jan. 22 balloting.

"I feel I have exhausted my political activity, which had never been an object of desire for me. There are many ways for me to serve the country, not just through politics," he said, adding that his decision was spurred in part by his desire to spend more time with his family.

His resignation could mean the departure of the most moderating influence on hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who holds a wide lead in polls and is expected to easily win re-election. Barak, who heads a small centrist faction in parliament, often served as Netanyahu's unofficial envoy to Washington to smooth over differences with the Obama White House.

RECOMMENDED: Is Israel a democracy?

His impending departure comes at a key time for Israel, as the nation struggles to find its way in a region where the old order of Arab autocrats has been swept aside by the Arab Spring and the rise of Islamist political parties. Israel also faces a looming decision on whether to attack Iran's nuclear program, which the Jewish state fears is designed to develop atomic weapons ? a charge Tehran denies.

Less than a week ago, Barak led an eight-day military offensive against the Hamas militant group that rules the Gaza Strip. The fighting, aimed at ending rocket fire from the Palestinian territory. ended in a fragile truce.

"I didn't make this decision (to leave politics) without hesitating, but I made it wholeheartedly," he told a hastily arranged news conference, saying he had been wrestling with the decision for weeks.

He evaded repeated questions about whether he might agree to serve as a Cabinet minister in an upcoming government, leaving open the possibility that he might still retain an impact on Israeli politics. While most Cabinet ministers also hold parliamentary seats, they do not have to be elected lawmakers, and such appointments have been made in the past.

Barak, 70, made the surprise announcement even after polls showed his breakaway Independence Party gaining momentum after the Gaza campaign.

Despite the bump in the polls, Barak still could have found himself fighting for his political survival once election day rolls around. Surveys before the Gaza operation were unkind to his party, at times showing it polling too weakly to even send a single representative to parliament.

"I feel I have exhausted my political activity, which had never been an object of desire for me. There are many ways for me to serve the country, not just through politics," he said, adding that his decision was spurred in part by his desire to spend more time with his family.

Possible replacements include Vice Premier Moshe Yaalon, a former military chief, and Shaul Mofaz, a former military chief and defense minister, who now serves as chairman of the opposition Kadima Party.

Barak's political career was as turbulent as his 36-year military career was dazzling.

Littlest Pet Shop hits Android

Littlest Pet Shop

If you've got kids, chances are you've been exposed to the Littlest Pet Shop at some point. Little animals (duh) waiting to be adopted and cared for. My kids love the toys. Now I have to fork over my Android tablet (it's good on phones, too) for yet another game. Such is life.

Littlest Pet Shop is very much in the same vein as My Little Pony (which makes sense, given the back-end talent they have in common). You're charged with taking care of the pets, which means acquiring planes for them to live and play, food to eat, earn rewards and complete quests.

There's a good 105MB of data that has to be downloaded before you do anything. Then the cuteness begins. At least until your kid tries to work a $20 in-app purchase. Consider yourselves warned.

Short Story Assassin RP.

Ok so this kind of high concept as its going to be an RP about a group of thieves and assassins set in a post apocalyptic Steampunk world with a distinctly western feel.

The kicker is instead of the traditional ?to me, to you? style of RPing this is going to have a blend of that and short stories.

Still with me? I?ll have a more in-depth explanation below.

So there is this place called The Flats which is basically a desert with different groups and cities scattered around it. Tech is steampunky and people?s dispositions tend to be of the post apocalyptic dog eat dog variety.

In this varied landscape an individual has seen a gap in the market for someone who is willing to provide certain discrete services. In this case killing and thieving.
The characters would be recruited into a group simply called The Workshop. They will get to live in the work shop with their fellow professionals. This is where more traditional Rp elements are done but this is only secondary to the main the crux of the RP which are the short stories.

When you want a job tell my Character and they will provide a briefing. It can be steal this, rob that kill her, rescue him or whatever. You then go off and write about how you character accomplishes this task.

Inventiveness and character development is the name of the game. We want to see bright eyed people rock up you only want to make quick buck tht eventually become jaded shells, twisted killers or worse.

Of course you could spend your time hanging around the workshop but ultimately you?ll want to get out there and see the world.
Which brings me neatly onto my next point. The Flats is a region I love to RP in. I built it over a couple of years and it basically consists of four towns. One is filled with religious zealots, another with sky pirates, another with wanton capitalists and the last with a bunch of Mafioso wannabe?s .

In-between you have the plains filled with murderous Tribes, ranchers, a mysterious nomadic tribe called the Ochil and miles of desert.

Anyway I reckon this could work if you like writing big posts and like to see you characters grow.

Anyhoo maybe you think this is stupid please comment if you do so I change it up.

On the other hand hopefully you think this rocks, in that case hit me up and we?ll see where to take it from there.

GHSU researcher assesses driving capability in MS patients

AUGUSTA, Ga. ? A simple, accurate testing protocol to determine driving fitness in individuals with multiple sclerosis is the aim of a three-year study at Georgia Health Sciences University.

Dr. Abiodun Akinwuntan, Interim Associate Dean for Research in the GHSU College of Allied Health Sciences, has received a $360,000 grant from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for phase one of a double-site study. Recruitment is underway for 90 participants at the GHSU Multiple Sclerosis Clinic in Augusta and an equal number at the Andrew C. Carlos MS Institute at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta.

?Multiple sclerosis is a progressive neurological disease that affects the ability to drive. In the early stages, it is possible for some patients to remain safe drivers; however, it is only a matter of time before the disease progresses to a level where driving is unsafe,? said Akinwuntan, Associate Professor of Physical Therapy, Neurology and Ophthalmology and Director of the GHSU Driving Simulation Laboratory.

The accident rate for drivers with MS is estimated to be three times higher than that of similarly aged healthy individuals, said Akinwuntan.

In an earlier study, Akinwuntan assessed 50 patients with relapsing-remitting MS, the most common of four types, and determined that just five specific fitness-to-drive tests could predict pass or fail outcomes on a road test with 91 percent accuracy.

Current practices administer 15 to 22 tests that last up to three hours and cost as much as $450. The five psychometric off-road tests can be given in less than 45 minutes for approximately $150.

The new study hopes to validate those findings by including patients with all four types of MS, expanding the number of subjects to 180, and narrowing participation to those who score between 3 and 7 on the Expanded Disability Status Scale.

?Studies have shown that typically those who score below 2.5 are relatively good drivers and those above 7 are not to fit to drive,? Akinwuntan said. ?So we are concentrating on those people in the middle who are starting to experience deficits that would affect their driving.?

A planned second phase of the NMSS study will focus on drivers? training. Running concurrent with phase one is a supplementary study funded by an Extramural Success Award from the GHSU Research Institute to compare driving simulation training with Wii-based exercise training to determine the more effective treatment. Dr. Miriam Cortez-Cooper is co-investigator.

Phase-one study participants will be tested for up to four hours over two days. The supplemental training study will last five weeks.

?The earlier drivers incorporate intervention training, the longer they will be able to stay on the road and maintain independence,? Akinwuntan said.

An interdisciplinary GHSU pilot study is also testing the same program on patients with age-related macular degeneration. Akinwuntan has had success with similar programs for stroke patients and individuals with Parkinson?s disease.

For more information, contact Akinwuntan at 706-721-3277 or aakinwuntan@georgiahealth.edu.

How to forge the 'digital edge' | IT-Online

Digital technology and the Internet of Things (IoT) are opening up new opportunities for companies to create new sources of customer value and revenue streams, according to Gartner. However, meaningful digitalised revenue opportunities are difficult to access and address, leading to significant challenges in establishing a fully digitalised business.

In the e-book ?The Digital Edge: Exploiting New Technology and Information for Business Advantage?, launched this week, Mark McDonald, group vice president and Gartner fellow, reveals how forging an edge requires new thinking and new approaches for bringing together digital and physical resources. The result is a new source of advantage, where technology supports growth.

Mr McDonald is discussing some of the key findings from the book at Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2012, which is being held in Barcelona through 8 November. He is explaining how the increasing density of digital technology is fuelling new kinds of innovation that can provide organisations with a digital edge.

?The first wave of business investment in technology created the modern IT-enabled enterprise by automating and integrating back-office and operational processes,? says McDonald. ?Then the internet wave of investment created electronic copies of analogue business models in the form of e-commerce, web stores and the like. Digitalising the business represents a new wave that will drive business investment in IT, based on the evolving capabilities of mobility, analytics, social computing, communications and cloud technologies.?

Gartner says that a digital edge comes from creating new combinations of analogue and digital resources resulting in new sources of customer value and company revenue or results. Analogue resources refer to the people, how they are organised, the equipment they use, the facilities they work in, as well as the company?s other physical aspects. Digital resources include information, customer history, situational awareness, and so forth. Digital resources also include the equipment that processes information such as mobile phones, tablet computers, sensors and computer controlled machinery.

However, a digital edge rests on more than the relationship between analogue and digital resources. These types overlap in the sense that organisations can achieve similar goals with different types of digitalisation.

?Selecting the right type of digitalisation rests on the scope and requirements of the outcome a company seeks from digitalisation,? says McDonald. ?The outside-in process for building a digital edge starts with an outcome that provides the basis for working outside-in. The results build up a digital edge based on achieving specific outcomes in the context of an overall theme or value proposition.?

Building a digital edge involves more than putting a web facade on a brick-and-mortar operation. Companies who give themselves a ?web-lift? merely add sales channels that are easy for others to imitate. Developing the alternative, a digital edge, involves creating new connections and capabilities across the organisation. Companies must build up their internal digital capabilities to produce externally relevant outcomes and results.

?Companies have a choice. They can apply new technologies to achieve even greater levels of operational integration and control, a technological approach to business based on making the organisation better. Or they can fully digitalise,? says McDonald. ?Fully digitalised businesses are already emerging, and they represent the superior choice because they go well beyond the familiar models that rely on advertising or freemiums.?

Obama sticks to guns on tax hike for wealthy

By Tom Curry, NBC News national affairs writer

Updated at 2 p.m. ET -- At a campaign-style event at the White House Friday, President Barack Obama invited congressional leaders to the White House next week for talks on how to avoid spending cuts and at least some of the tax increases scheduled to occur in January. But he insisted that tax increases on the wealthiest Americans must be part of any deal.

NBC's Brian Williams anchors President Obama's first post-election appearance, in which he calls on Congress to work with him to avoid the fiscal cliff and get the economy moving again.

In a statement at the White House, Obama indicated he will meet with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker John Boehner next week "so we can start to build consensus around the challenges that we can only solve together."

The president was referring to $64 billion in automatic spending cuts that will take effect in January if a deal cannot be reached. Those cuts are mandated by the Budget Control Act that Obama signed into law last year.?

In his first White House appearance since defeating Republican Mitt Romney in Tuesday's election,?Obama said he was "open to new ideas" to avoid?what is known as the ?fiscal cliff.??But he also dug in his heels by insisting that additional revenue be part of the solution.

??We can?t just cut our way to prosperity,? he said, adding that he would insist that ?the wealthiest Americans to pay a little more in taxes? ? a line that drew applause from the group of supporters standing behind him on stage. ?Obama defines "the wealthiest Americans" as single taxpayers earning more than $200,000 a year and couples with annual earnings in excess of $250,000.?

And he claimed?an election mandate, saying,??On Tuesday night we found out that the majority of Americans agree with my approach.??

Obama also repeated many of the themes of his re-election campaign speeches in Friday?s remarks ? such as his view that more federal infrastructure spending is needed.

Obama did not take any questions.

Budget analysts call the combination of automatic spending cuts and tax increases set to occur at year end the fiscal cliff.

As part of an agreement to avoid the fiscal cliff, Obama and congressional leaders must also agree how much taxes ought to go up and which taxpayers will be hit by tax hikes. According to the Congressional Budget Office taxes will increase by more than $400 billion in 2013 under current law.

Adding to the pressure to design a deal that would avoid the fiscal cliff, the CBO on Thursday repeated its previous warnings that the spending cuts, combined with scheduled tax increases, would probably cause a recession next year.

Specifically the CBO said in its Thursday report that the tax increases and spending cuts would cause the unemployment rate to rise to 9.1 percent by the fourth quarter of 2013, compared to a jobless rate of 7.9 percent in October.

In a video released by the Obama campaign, a tearful president thanks his campaign workers before he sets off to tackle second-term issues including taxes, the debt and replacing as many as five high profile secretaries in his Cabinet. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

The tax increases would raise the average tax burden by almost $3,500 per taxpayer in 2013, according to According to the Tax Policy Center. This would happen because the current income tax rates and some tax breaks are scheduled to expire or shrink on Dec. 31. Among them, the popular middle-class tax break, a $1,000-per-child tax credit for each child age 17 and younger, would be cut in half.?

In addition, starting on Jan. 1, the Affordable Care Act imposes a $20 billion tax increase on people with incomes above $200,000, or $250,000 for joint filers.? Adding to the tax increase, a temporary reduction in the Social Security payroll tax is set to expire at year end.

The president has argued for raising taxes on Americans with incomes over $200,000 and over $250,000 for married couples who file jointly.

But the exact mix of tax increases and who must pay them will be the subject of intense negotiations between the president and congressional leaders over the next few weeks.

Before February Obama and congressional leaders must also work out a deal to raise the federal government?s borrowing limit.

After re-election, House Speaker John Boehner says he believes the House GOP and President Obama will find common ground "to avoid the fiscal cliff." Boehner is also talking less harshly about the president's signature health care law.

In a press briefing Friday morning, Boehner said he is willing to work with Obama and congressional Democrats, but remains opposed to raising the tax rates for any Americans.

?The members of our majority understand how important it is to avert the fiscal cliff,? he said. He sketched out his opening bargaining position: Extend current tax rates for one year, allowing Congress time to entirely redesign the tax code, eliminating some tax deductions and preferences ? and pass ?entitlement reform.?

He made the case that ?by lowering rates and cleaning up the tax code we know that we?re going to get more economic growth. It?ll bring jobs back to America ? it?ll bring more revenue.?

The revenue question is crucial: Because the U.S. economy remains anemic, federal revenue has still not reached its pre-recession peak. While revenue increased for third consecutive year in fiscal 2012, it is still 5 percent below the 2007 peak.

Boehner warned about the spending pressure from growing entitlement programs: ?We?re spending a trillion dollars more than what we take in. You can?t continue to do that. This is year two of a 25-year demographic bubble. ?. Ten thousand Baby Boomers like me retiring every day.?

He said ?everything on the revenue side and on the spending side has to be looked at.?

Obama and the Democrats go into the bargaining over fiscal policy with voters having given them a stronger bargaining position.

Kevin Lamarque / Reuters

President Barack Obama addresses supporters during his election night rally in Chicago, Nov. 6, 2012.

In Tuesday?s balloting, Democrats scored a net gain of at least six seats in the House, which was better than most analysts had predicted, and they exceeded expectations by gaining two seats in the Senate, dashing GOP hopes for a takeover of the upper chamber.

But Boehner said Tuesday that ?The American people re-elected a Republican majority (in the House) and I?m proud of the fact that our team in a very difficult year was able to maintain our majority.?

But showing that the election outcome had altered his strategy, Boehner signaled a retreat Thursday from Republican calls for total repeal of the Affordable Care Act.

?I think the election changes that,? Boehner said in an interview with ABC News. ?It's pretty clear that the president was re-elected, Obamacare is the law of the land.?

But he added, ?I think there are parts of the healthcare law that are going to be very difficult to implement. And very expensive. And as the time when we're trying to find a way to create a path toward a balanced budget everything has to be on the table.? The speaker may try to make rescinding parts of the law an ingredient of any deal he tries to strike with Obama and Reid.

How Oregon almost became a pot-dealing state

Washington and Colorado became the first states to legalize pot - but why not Oregon?

All three voted on marijuana-legalization ballot initiatives, and Washington and Colorado passed them by 10-percentage-point margins. But Oregon, which is bluer than Colorado, was the only state to vote against legalized pot on Tuesday, turning down Measure 80 54 percent to 46 percent. Some Election-Night observers are scratching their heads.

Part of the difference was that Oregon's initiative failed to gather support from big-time donors. In January, the Associated Press reported on the troubled financial history of Paul Stanford, the initiative's main backer, who makes a business of connecting medical-pot patients with sympathetic doctors.

Perhaps it's also that Oregon's law was kind of wacky: It would have turned the state, effectively, into a pot dealer.

What's the "fiscal cliff" and how would it affect you? See the answer in our infographic HERE.

The new laws in Washington and Colorado direct state boards to license and regulate commercial pot growers, processors, and sellers, with the states reaping tax revenues from the new commerce. (If those laws are implemented, that is; there are still doubts over whether the federal government will seek to block them). The laws loosely followed models suggested elsewhere, and both were supported financially by the Drug Policy Alliance, a national drug-policy-reform group.

In Oregon, had Measure 80 passed, the state would have licensed sellers and processors - but instead of regulating its sale, the state would have bought the weed, packaged it, stamped it with a state seal and a potency grade, and sold it to customers at a profit.

This all would have been done by something like ABC stores in liquor-controlled states: An Oregon Cannabis Commission (OCC) would have run all ends of the process, finally selling it at OCC stores. Profits would have gone to purchases, testing, grading, shipping, promotion of Oregon hemp and hemp-made biodiesel, and back to the state's general fund. Like an actual drug dealer, the state could have stopped selling it to any legal, 21-and-over buyers who became pot-addled derelicts (failing to live up to "statutory or common-law dut[ies]").

But the oddest thing about Oregon's failed law was its preamble, which jumped quickly to a history lesson about George Washington's cannabis growth and the preference of "Gouverneur Morris of Pennsylvania, who spoke at the U.S. Constitutional Convention in 1787 more than any other delegate" for marijuana over tobacco. It also called marijuana's legal ban "liberticidal."

Paul Stanford, for his part, has vowed to push the law again in 2014, unless the state legislature passes it first.

Killing Rumors With Facts: No, Facebook Didn?t Decrease Page Feed Reach To Sell More Promoted Posts

News Feed Chill OutPeople have been screaming bloody murder, claiming Facebook purposefully reduced how many people see Page posts in the news feed to get Pages to pay to reach their fans. But that's just not true, and I have the data to prove it, plus Facebook confirming the rumor is false. Facebook did make spammy Pages less visible in the feed, but that was to make the news feed better, not to make more money.

Apple may ditch Intel chips in Macs, says Bloomberg

Apple may ditch Intel chips in Macs says Bloomberg

According to Bloomberg Apple is considering a move away from Intel chips for its cherished Mac line. The move would be the third major CPU shift for the brand which has previously relied on Motorola 68000 and Power PC chips. The move away from Intel could also mean a move away from x86 as Apple has been heavily invested in its own ARM-based chip designs in recent years. Bloomberg's sources suggest that Cupertino is actively working on a version of its tweaked ARM architecture that would run inside Mac PC, in particular its laptop products could stand to benefit from its battery sipping design.

The change will not happen immediately. In fact, the sources said such a move was years away, potentially not happening till 2017. But, as the gulf between "mobile" and "desktop" products begins to shrink and the boundaries blend, it would only seem to make sense that Apple would look to leverage its high-profile purchase of P.A. Semi to good use and inch ever closer to being a completely self-reliant corporate entity. We don't think it's any secret that Apple would, if it could, design and manufacture every component itself.

Report: Car bomb hits near major Damascus hotel

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? A car bomb exploded near a major hotel in the Syrian capital of Damascus on Sunday, wounding several people, a pro-government television station reported.

The powerful blast shook the Dama Rose hotel and shattered much of its glass, Ikhbariyeh TV reported. The hotel in the past was used by U.N. observers visiting Syria. The site of the blast is 500 meters (yards) from the army chief-of-staff's building.

The report said the bomb was planted under a car parked in an outdoor lot near the government Labor Union building. The union chief, Mohammad Azouz, told The Associated Press that at least 12 people ? all syndicate members ? were wounded by shattered glass and two of them are in critical condition.

Regional satellite stations broadcast brief clips from the capital showing a plume of white smoke rose from a building. Azouz said firefighters at the scene were putting out a blaze caused by the blast, while ambulances were taking the wounded to nearby hospitals. He said there were blood stains on the street.

In northeast Raqqa province, the state news agency SANA reported that gunmen assassinated a leading member of the ruling Baath party. It said the gunmen broke into the home of Ismail al-Hamadeh at dawn and sprayed him with bullets as he slept, killing him instantly.

Elsewhere in Syria, the army clashed with rebels in the northern cities of Idlib and Aleppo, Damascus and the southern border town of Daraa where the uprising against President Bashar Assad began in March 2011, according to the London-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

In the Damascus suburbs of Harasta and al-Hajira, the army and the rebel Free Syrian Army exchanged heavy fire, killing a handful of rebels, SANA said. The army destroyed some rebel vehicles fitted with machine guns, according to the report.

More memories of long-lost food and drink

A couple of days ago I began a nostalgic look back at food and drink memories that are, for all practical purposes, lost to me. I suppose if I spent enough money, some of these tastes could be had again, but would the reality be as good as the memory?

Last time I looked back at some food and drink memories of my childhood. I'll start this time with a treat from my teen years.

Other than a couple of paper routes at age 12-14, my first real job was at McDonald's. When I was 15 and a freshman, my older brother "got me in" (that was the phraseology back then) at the McDonald's restaurant in Fond du Lac, Wis., where he was killing time between his high school graduation and being drafted into the Army.

I could write a book at my time under the Golden Arches, and for many years I thought I would. Unlike most of my contemporaries, I was a long-term employee at Mickey Dee's, working there from 1965-70. I was there when McDonald's was strictly a drive-in, in the days before inside seating. I was there when the orange bowl and root beer barrel stood atop the counter. I was there when the Big Mac was introduced. I was there when women were first allowed to work at McDonald's.

Much of the time during the years I worked at McDonald's, at least at our store, employees were allowed, within reasonable limits, free lunch or dinner while working. As you can imagine, with the rather limited menu at that time, I looked for ways to vary my mealtime selections.

Honestly, more than 40 years later I no longer remember whether I invented the "cannibal burger" or was introduced to it by another employee. But it is on my list of once-favorite foods that I'll never be able to enjoy again.

Some years later, I learned that my cannibal burger was known in classier circles as steak tartare.

I began my creation by mashing together two of the standard 1/10 pound hamburger patties and sprinkling it liberally with dehydrated onion flakes.?This was placed into the special bun steamer that we used to soften the buns for Filet-O-Fish.

The burger was steamed just long enough to get the fat flowing and the onions plumped?back up.?Then a bun was steamed and the burger placed thereon with a slice of cheese top and bottom. The sandwich was topped with the handmade tartar sauce that we made back then, and heavily salted and peppered. With a large root beer and an order of the fries that I was so expert in making, it was a meal that I would happily partake of today instead of the finest filet mignon.

Given the highly publicized salmonella and e. coli incidents of recent years, I don't guess I'll be seeing steak tartare on a menu any more.

Surprisingly, another of the taste treats that I recall so longingly came from a chain restaurant. After a night of drinking at area minor bars, my friends and I often found ourselves after midnight at Lum's, again in Fond du Lac.

My order never varied; two hot dogs and a schooner of beer. But these were not your average hot dogs or beer.

Lum's prepared their hot dogs by steaming them in beer and serving them on a steam roll. Sauerkraut was optional, and I never optioned for it. The beer was Schlitz dark. I don't believe I ever saw Schlitz dark anywhere else. It was foamy and had the body color of root beer, but it didn't have the heaviness or burnt malt taste of Guiness Stout or any other dark beer I've had since.

The Lum's chain, which would probably be characterized today as casual family dining, seems to have failed or faded away in the 1980s.

I left home the day after Christmas in 1972, to begin my journalism career?on a small town weekly newspaper in Wautoma, Wis. In the year and a half that I roamed Waushara County as?a reporter, failed ad salesman and paper delivery guy, I encountered two gustatory delights that stand out even four decades later. A steady diet of these would have killed me by now, but I'd give jump at the chance to enjoy them again.

Both meals were encountered in country taverns (remember those?).

The first was french fried lobster at a small tavern on the outskirts of Wautoma. I don't remember the name anymore; it was Pine Tree or Pine Cone or something. But, oh, I remember the lobster that I enjoyed there many a Friday night. Both my wife and I rate it as the best meal we've ever eaten.

After I left Wautoma for Iola, I never again got to enjoy that french fried lobster. I kick myself now that I didn't make the one-hour drive every Friday night until the bar closed.

I've had plenty of lobster in the intervening years. I've even had some sort lobster-cake sandwich at a McDonald's in Maine. I've had french fried lobster twice since 1974. It wasn't the same.?Those latter day lobster meals featured frozen shredded lobster or some other form of macerated lobster meat. The fried lobster in Wautoma was lobster chunks. They were served drenched in melted butter and washed down with mugs of cold beer.

I'm sure that there are lots of places that serve similar french fried lobster chunks . . . I just haven't found them.

Just a couple of years ago I drove down to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to attend a coin show and promote the candidacy of my former boss, Cliff Mishler, in his successful run for president of the American Numismatic Association.

Driving back to Iola on a Sunday afternoon, I purposely took the back roads so I could drive through Waushara County and stop at a country tavern that I had?frequented in 1973-74 in the township of?Dakota.

When I lived and worked near Wautoma, the bar, which sat on a muddy creek, on Wednesdays used to serve turtle soup and french fried turtle. I used to stop there at noon and each visit had to make the painful decision as to whether to order the soup or the fried turtle.

Like the lobster, the fried turtle was in large chunks and drowned in melted butter. The soup also featured large pieces of turtle meat, in a thick, very rich, reddish-brown stock. I've never seen either of those items offered anywhere else, though I'm sure they can be found on a menu somewhere.

The bar was still there, at least in an expanded, updated form, but there was no turtle or turtle soup to be had.

The final item on my list of long-lost favorites would be the easiest to once again enjoy. All it would take is a plane ticket to England.

I made my first and only trip overseas in 1990. It was a bonus of sorts for having engendered and expanded the very profitable sportscard division of Krause Publications. At the time Sports Collectors Digest, the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards and the related periodicals and books were an $18 million a year arm of the company, generating about half of the company's income.

While in England I first encountered what is known there simply as "beer". British bitter beer is dark and served cool, not cold, in pints -- imperial pints at that.

Maybe it was the ambiance of a Kensington hotel bar, or small-town pubs, but that beer haunts me more than 20 years later. I've had a few bitters since. Once in downtown Ottawa and a couple of times at the now-gone British Bulldog Pub in Las Vegas, but it hard to find in the U.S. I understand it doesn't travel well.

Still, if this style of beer has been made in England for centuries, there's no reason some of the microbrew restaurants that have sprung up all over America can't be making it. I try to patronize those places whenever I find them, but they never have a true bitter.

There you have the nostalgic musings of an old man. As I said in the first installment, I'm sure my longings for these specific foods and drinks are more about mourning lost youth and kicking myself for not making the most of opportunities -- food and drink and otherwise -- that were right in front of me.

Offer something unique on your site that none of your competitors have. Post something unexpected, like an animated cartoon, a video presentation or a free offer to generate interest. Giving people something they can?t get anywhere else gives you a great hook you can use to market your site.

Make sure to take advantage of social media to grow your customer base. A fan page on Facebook, for example, will allow your customers a chance to leave feedback others will see, which is similar to an online kind of ?word of mouth?. Another excellent way to build up a conversation with your customers is through Twitter.

Include something that is a niche or unique to your site. This can attract a lot of individuals to your site. Once they have been driven to your site, they are more likely to browse around, improving your search result rank.

An important title will give you respect and your customers will pay attention to what you have to say. If you are a business owner, become the CEO or President. If you are not the owner, you can still adopt an impressive title. Using this title as your signature gives you the perfect chance to display your importance.

When promoting your business with internet marketing, carefully monitor the information you are offering consumers. Strive to make your content valuable and unique. Your website should teach visitors interesting things about your company and provide them with current information.

Make sure you have a good logo even if you are a small company. Customers will remember you and your brand if you use marketing tools like this. Slogans will stay on the mind of customers for a long time period. When customers are in the market for a particular product, the association they have made with your slogan may cause them to look up your company before making their purchase.

It?s fine to want to become wealthy from Internet marketing as long as it doesn?t interfere with your ultimate business goals. Striving for greatness will keep your head in the game and give you the determination to always want to be better, and with the tips in this article, you should be on your way to marketing success.

New York nanny arrested in slayings of two young children

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York nanny suspected of slaying two young children of a Manhattan couple last month in their luxury apartment was arrested on Saturday and charged with murder in their stabbing deaths, New York's deputy police commissioner said.

The nanny, Yoselyn Ortega, was arrested over the deaths of 6-year-old Lucia Krim and her toddler brother Leo, who had been days shy of his second birthday, following a bedside interview at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center.

The children's mother, Marina Krim, found her son and older daughter stabbed to death in the bathtub as she returned home on October 25 from a swimming lesson with a third child, 3-year-old Nessie, who was unharmed, police have said.

The nanny, who remains hospitalized and under guard, then began stabbing herself in front of the children's mother in the apartment on Manhattan's affluent Upper West Side.

"No longer intubated and recuperating from what appeared to be wounds she inflicted on herself at the crime scene, Ortega agreed to talk to New York City detectives this afternoon," Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne said in a statement.

"After the interview, at 6:06 p.m. today, Ortega was formally arrested and charged with murdering both children."

He said that Ortega, 50, was charged with two counts of first degree murder and two counts of second degree murder over the killings, which sent shock waves through the city.

Ortega, who had been employed by the Krim family for two years before the killings, lived with her son and sister near the Krims' apartment off Central Park and has been a naturalized U.S. citizen for a decade, police said.

She was apparently referred to the Krims by another family, police have said.

On the evening of the killings, Marina Krim had entered the apartment with her middle child after Ortega failed to meet them as planned at a local dance studio with the two other children.

Krim saw that the apartment was dark and returned to the lobby to ask the doorman if the nanny and kids had gone out, police said. The doorman said no, and she returned to the apartment and went into the bathroom, where she found the children.

Kevin Krim, the children's father and an executive with CNBC, had been heading home from a business trip, He was met by police at the airport and notified of the killings, police said.

Report: Microsoft may make its own Windows Phone hardware

21 hrs.

Microsoft is working with Asian suppliers to create its?own Windows Phone hardware, says the Wall Street Journal.?

You could be forgiven for asking, "Didn't Microsoft just launch its own phones?" But those new Windows Phone 8 models run software from Microsoft on hardware built by Nokia and HTC, while the rumored phone in question would be Microsoft through and through.

Controlling both hardware and software is the model long held by Apple, adopted by Google as well in recent years. (At least in part: Google still licenses its Android operating system to companies like Samsung, and its flagship Nexus phone is built by LG; its own hardware company, Motorola, has yet to graduate to home team status.) By producing all parts of the mobile device, including online services, it is possible to provide a more integrated, predictable experience for the user.

This isn't the first time we've heard reports of?Microsoft's purported moves into phone hardware. And any forays into first-party hardware may simply be a backup plan in case Windows Phone 8 fails to gain traction with customers on other partner devices.

But as the recent launch of the Microsoft Surface proves, Microsoft is willing to take steps into hardware manufacturing that seemed alien to the company as recently as a year ago.?
