Google Latitude shuts down August 9, but Google+ location sharing will go on (and on)

Checking in to your favorite places is a great way to let people know when you're somewhere important, but there are plenty of in-between times when you might want close acquaintances to know where you are so they can tell when you got stuck in traffic or got home safely. That's when Latitude comes in -- or, perhaps we should say, came in. As part of its Maps redesign, Google is sending its Latitude service the way of Google Reader. Latitude gets lost on August 9th, less than a month from now, and all of its various location-centric APIs will wander offline at the same time. Additionally, Google is removing check-in functionality from Maps, asking that you use Google+ instead, which is also where you'll have to turn if you want to share your location with friends -- a feature not currently enabled in the iOS version of the app. Google promises that functionality is "coming soon," so in the interim please tell your significant other the same when they ask what time you'll getting home from work.

What if "Blurred Lines" was the 'Cosby Show' Theme Song?

What do you get when you combine Robin Thicke with The Cosby Show? Possibly the best thing ever! One of the most memorable aspects of The Cosby Show (and there were many) was the opening credits scene featuring Bill Cosby, aka Cliff Huxtable, dancing with his loving family. A mashup video of that same scene has now surfaced, but this time, the Huxtables are dancing to Thicke’s new hit song, "Blurred Lines." The "Blurred Lines" music video has already made headlines with its two-step dancing and topless women. But that was no match for Cosby’s smooth moves and the beautiful Phylicia Rashad. Watch the Huxtables get down here!

Google Maps for Android update rolling out, brings new design and features

Google Maps for Android

Google is rolling out the Google Maps update for Android devices, one of the Google services that was given a new look, but also new features, and which was demoed at this year?s Google I/O edition.

The company overhauled both its desktop and mobile versions of Google Maps, and now the mobile experience will be available to users that have a device running Android 4.0.3 or later.

In addition to a new design for Android handsets and tablets, the update will bring you ?enhanced navigation including live traffic updates, incident reports and dynamic rerouting? and improve the way you explore local ?places to eat, drink, shop, play and sleep.? The screenshots below will give you a quick taste of what Google Maps will feel like on your tablet and/or smartphone once you get the new update:

As Android Police explains, the update may not be available to download on all devices just yet, but the publications offers links to software-specific APKs.

In the Google Play Store, Google says that the update will be ?gradually rolling out to Android 4.0.3+ users over the next few weeks,? so in case you didn?t manually install the APK suitable for your device, you?ll may have to wait a while to get it.

Florida to review handling of homeowners' insurance claims

The Associated Press

Published: July 10, 2013

TALLAHASSEE - Florida's insurance consumer advocate wants to look at how insurers are handling claims from homeowners.

Robin Smith Westcott announced Wednesday the creation of a working group that will meet later this month. The group will be asked to come up with recommendations, including whether legislators should change state laws that cover policyholders.

Westcott, who was appointed by Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater, says she was prompted to put together the group after hearing from frustrated homeowners at recent forums.

She said in a statement that consumers should not be "victimized" by poor claims handling or by those seeking to exploit homeowners following a loss.

Westcott said the working group will meet July 17 and 18. It will include representatives from both consumer organizations and the insurance industry.

For more information, visit the consumer advocate website here. Or call, 877-693-5236.

UK & World News: Miliband details union link reforms

Ed Miliband has set out a series of reforms designed to reshape Labour's relationship with the trade unions and end the "machine politics" behind the alleged ballot-rigging controversy in Falkirk.

In changes which could provoke a major clash with the union bosses who bankroll his party, Mr Miliband said he would reform the system of affiliating union members to Labour, introduce a code of conduct for would-be election candidates and introduce open primary elections for Labour's next candidate for London Mayor.

But he also laid down a challenge to the other parties, announcing that a Labour government would impose a limit on MPs' earnings from second jobs. And he called for the reopening of stalled talks on the funding of political parties, repeating his offer to cap donations from individuals, businesses and trade unions.

Mr Miliband said that events in Falkirk - where the Unite union is accused of signing up more than 100 members, some of them without their knowledge, in the hope of fixing the selection for its preferred candidate - represented "part of the death-throes of the old politics".

The Labour leader said he wanted an "open, transparent and trusted" politics, which is the opposite of the "rightly hated" machine politics seen in the Scottish constituency as it chose a replacement for disgraced MP Eric Joyce.

Events in Falkirk had confirmed voters' "worst suspicions" that politicians are "in it for themselves", he said.

Mr Miliband said he did not want a change in the 1980s law which allows unions to maintain political funds to pursue campaigns, but wanted to end the situation under which many unions hand over cash from the funds to Labour, unless members choose to "opt out".

Instead, he said individual members should actively "opt in" to joining the party, saying: "I do not want any individual to be paying money to the Labour Party in affiliation fees unless they have deliberately chosen to do so. Individual trade union members should choose to join Labour through the affiliation fee, not be automatically affiliated. In the 21st century it just doesn't make sense for anyone to be affiliated to a political party unless they have chosen to do so."

The move threatens to cost Labour millions of pounds in donations, but Mr Miliband said it could also swell party membership from 200,000 to "a far higher number". In a message to trade union members, he said: "I invite you to be at the centre of what this party does, day in, day out, at local level."

Mr Miliband announced he has appointed former Labour general secretary and union official Lord (Ray) Collins of Highbury to lead work on the introduction of the new system. Lord Collins will also consider how the open primary process proposed for the London Mayoral candidate selection could be spread to other parts of the country.

Military Coup In Egypt: A Recipe For Failure ? Analysis

Graffiti against Egypt's Morsi, photo by Japhet Weeks VOA

Graffiti against Egypt's Morsi, photo by Japhet Weeks VOA

By James M. Dorsey

July 9, 2013

Egypt IS back to square one, with the military grabbing centre stage again through a coup in all but name. This came just two-and-a-half years after mass protests toppled President Hosni Mubarak in a popular uprising that rejected a security-dominated autocracy and the military?s behind-the-scenes central role in politics. The military owes its return and the prospect of regaining its key role in Egyptian politics to the missteps of ousted President Mohammed Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood government ? the very force with whom it was at odds for the past six decades.

Morsi came to office after more than a year of transitory military rule that the armed forces bungled with its inept, post-revolt attempts to preserve as much as possible the old autocratic system and its perks and privileges: control of national security; an independent relationship with the United States that funds it to the tune of US$1.3 billion a year; rejection of civilian oversight and autonomy for its commercial empire that accounts for at least ten percent of Egypt?s gross national product.

Legitimacy versus endorsement

History will remember Morsi less as Egypt?s first post-revolt, democratically-elected president than as a failed leader who thwarted the achievements of the popular uprising?s goals and strengthened by default the military?s grip on politics, while presiding over an economy that was already in stark decline following the revolt that overthrew Mubarak. He also severely tarnished Saudi Arabia and Qatar?s support for Islamists across the Middle East and North Africa, and demonstrated that the Brotherhood, despite being one of the world?s largest and best organised Islamist movements, has a long way to go before it is ready for government.

Morsi?s failure is much the result of opposition and resistance by key state institutions ? the military, the security forces, and the judiciary ? to the rise of the Brotherhood. Morsi?s decision to run for office, contrasting starkly with the Brotherhood?s initial reluctance to join the anti-Mubarak uprising, broke its early promises not to seek a post-revolt majority in parliament or field a candidate for president.

Morsi?s insistence to the bitter end that he was a legitimately-elected leader reflected the same majoritarian interpretation of democracy displayed by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in his response last month to mass protests. Both Morsi and Erdogan?s failure to adopt inclusive policies alienated a significant portion of the population. But unlike Erdogan, Morsi failed to realise that he had lost the second ingredient of legitimacy alongside electoral victory: a recognition by those that had not voted for him that he was the country?s elected leader.

Far-reaching consequences

Morsi?s political demise has far-reaching consequences for Egypt as well as the Middle East and North Africa:

  • The military will remain a key force free of civilian control and with a significant political and economic power base even if newly-appointed President Adly Mansour moves immediately towards free and fair elections. The reinstatement of Mubarak?s attorney general, the rounding up of hundreds of Muslim Bothers in the wake of the coup, and the prosecutor?s investigation of Morsi on charges of ?insulting the presidency? suggest that the military sees its intervention as an opportunity to shape Egypt in its mould. It raises the question of the role of the military in future anti-autocratic struggles in the Middle East and North Africa.
  • As Egypt ventures into uncharted waters, the military would do well to look towards Southeast Asia where retired military officers in countries like the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar successfully managed their countries? transition to democracy. Those officers understood that their interests were best protected by getting in front of the cart rather than seeking to salvage what they could of a failed system that lacked popular support. That is a recognition that has yet to be accepted by Egypt?s armed forces as well as other Arab militaries.
  • The coup reinforces a widespread sentiment among Islamists that, in the words of Morsi?s national security advisor Essam al-Haddad, ?democracy is not for Muslims.? It risks the radicalisation of Islamists across the region who may see the ousting of Morsi as evidence that the Brotherhood?s strategy of working within the system is doomed to failure. There is little short of releasing detained Brothers, lifting the ban on Islamist media and immediate free and fair elections in which the Brotherhood will be allowed to compete unhindered that will counter the Islamists? sense of disenfranchisement.
  • That sense of disenfranchisement is reinforced by the repression of the Brothers by Egypt?s three previous presidents ? Gamal Abdel Nasser, Anwar Sadat and Mubarak; the 1991 abortion of Algerian elections to prevent the victorious Islamists from taking office, thus sparking a brutal civil war; the soft coup against Turkish Islamist Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan in the late 1990s; and the Western boycott of Gaza following the electoral triumph of Hamas.
  • The intervention of the military strengthens Saudi Arabia in its rivalry with Qatar for influence in the region. Saudi Arabia, backed by the United Arab Emirates, cemented its regional predominance by assuring the Egyptian military that it would step in if the United States cut off its US$1.3 billion annual aid to the armed forces or if Qatar, the Brotherhood?s main backer, reduced its $5 billion support to the government during Morsi?s tenure. The intervention was Qatar?s second regional setback as the country seeks to stamp its own influence in the Middle East. Similarly the supply by Saudi Arabia of non-US surface-to-air missiles to Syrian rebels ? endorsed by the US ? was from the kingdom?s perspective designed to strength the resistance to President Bashar al-Assad as well as to weaken the Brotherhood?s Syrian wing supported by Qatar.

Meteorology on the Front-line in the USA | Royal Meteorological ...

With the wildfire season upon the USA and the recent high temperatures and tragic loss of life, the question of how meterology might help arises. Enter the Incident Meteorologist, or IMET.

The US National Weather Service (NWS) trains meteorologists to work closely with fire control specialists from the Forest Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management and other state and local fire agencies.

imet

IMETs use computers to access information from local and national NWS offices. Surface observations, upper air observations, Doppler Radar, and weather satellite pictures are used to make specialized forecasts. Daily coordination calls are used to discuss forecasts with local NWS offices and other IMETs that may be working other fires in the area.

There are less than a hundred IMETs employed by NWS and during the fire season they are sent to remote locations to support wildfire operations. They receive specialist training in microscale forecasting, fire behaviour and fire suppression, making them key members of fire fighting teams.

imet

FireRAWS are portable weather stations that continuously measure temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction. These units also include observations of fuel temperature, fuel moisture, solar radiation and precipitation. In addition, the upgraded units include GOES satellite communication capability so the data reports can be accessed via the Internet. The FireRAWS are placed in a safe location near the fire to provide the IMETS with reliable and continuous weather information. Field observers also take weather readings on the fire line. This helps in understanding how topography influences the weather.

The IMETs are invaluable when it comes to preparing the critical forecasts needed for fire suppression and planned burning projects. Sometimes, as with the Smoke Jumpers of Washington State, fires are started deliberately in order to manage forests, or create breaks. One of the most important tools of an IMET is the All-hazard Meteorological Response System (AMRS), which enables forecasters to stay at the command post and provide immediate support to the firefighters.

IMETs will receive training in mesoscale?(large-scale) and?microscale?(the smallest) weather systems. Mesoscale phenomena include thunderstorms and squall lines, while microscale events could include air turbulence and dust storms.

imets

IMETs live in fire camp just like the rest of the firefighters. ?Smoke can be seen billowing from the fire in the background.

Another part of the training for IMETs includes rapid deployment with portable forecast equipment. Forecasters set up their units near fire lines and can help provide the information that enables fire managers to decide where to move fire crews, how to plan tactics and ensure the safety of the public and the firefighters

IMETs will normally provide weather forecasts at the morning and evening fire crew briefings and also the strategy meetings for each shift.

With about 100,000 wildfires every year, their role in supporting the fire crews is vital.

A Taste of Autism in the East | Special Education & IEP Advisor

There?s a hair roller stuck with a piece of Velcro to a piece of card on the wall. Alongside it is a separate strip of cardboard with a small card attached with Velcro, on which is a picture with the name of what?s on the image hand written underneath. These two strips of cardboard demarcate the gap between the least and most able students in this part of the autism school in Beijing, China.

I?ve taken a short, dusty walk from the original Stars and Rain autism school to this building which teaches around 6 students aged 13-18 at any one time. When I arrive there are only five students, four adolescent men and one female. Chinese Special Educational Needs teachers, who have little in-service training and still less status for their work, use TEACCH (the Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication Related Handicapped Children) methods and visual timetabling to achieve goals and develop communication. On the day I visit, there are two teachers and three German volunteers whose internships program sees them stay for a year in the capital?s suburbs, working daily in the upper school and sleeping in local accommodation.

The teacher (li shuai), Peter, who shows me around, tells me how important it is for students to have the continuity of staff. The German volunteer, Mascha who helps with translation on my visit, is there for one year. Some volunteers only come for a matter of weeks, causing some level of distress to students when they leave. They arrive from all corners, from other Asian countries to Europe and Africa.? Germany has an on-going arrangement. The German Embassy is also highly supportive in terms of allowing fundraising activities to take place on its premises, splitting the funds raised among several local charities. Students at this school make jewellery, cards and other items to sell at the Christmas Bizarre but their output and the money gained are relatively small, so dividing the overall funds benefits the school.

China03132 353Each room in this tight, three-floored building, has a separate function. This differentiation is important for students and forms part of the structure that is essential to their lives. The teaching room houses individual work stations, as one expects in classes in the West. One young man only recognises symbols, rather than words and images. The hair roller is for him and has nothing to do with hair fashion; it marks the first thing he must do for his next activity, sit down. Two young men used pictures to understand what to do next and one young woman and a young man were able to understand Chinese characters (writing). In this ?work? room students use the process of TEACCH to guide them through a series of activities such as stringing beads, making cards or screwing together nuts and bolts.

This element of finding a purpose for each individual seems more obvious in China than the West. In the UK certainly, leisure activities for our severely autistic population are seen as just a valuable as ?work? or being productive. We are privileged to live in an economy and society where severely disabled people don?t have to be employed and a social security system will give financial support. In the People?s Republic of China (PRC) levels of poverty dictate that all must earn or provide for themselves or their families. Nowhere is this more apparent than walking near major tourist attractions such as the Lama Temple, where I found myself among easily fifteen physically and mentally disabled people lying on the ground or being propped up behind a begging bowl.

Other school activities include a gym, where TEACCH again applies, guiding students to perform a set number of, say pull-ups on a piece of equipment, before they can place a card which indicates they?ve completed the task. The gym itself is rudimentary but it is posh compared with the relaxation room. The latter is a good example of making the utmost of a desperate lack of resources. Old fabric hung over a beam in what to westerners might seem a small and dingy room. Plastic had been wrapped around a lamp to dull its light and create a more soothing atmosphere. There were two large teddy bears and a cushion on the floor.? A CD player was used for soothing music. Although basic to foreigners, this room was a resourceful creation. It brought home how wasteful we often are and how unappreciative of the many facilities we have for our autistic children. What would be very little money to many of us, would transform even this small space of a relaxation room.

China03132 359Each student has their own named set of crockery and cutlery, either named using Chinese characters, pictures or a symbol. The same applies to seating, such as the well-worn stools for the dining table. Cooking and food form a fundamental part of Chinese life and this is reflected in the daily cooking activities in the house. Students all participate, at various levels in preparing food for the oven. The day I went they had made cookies. Unfortunately something had gone wrong and most had been cremated, so the teacher was in the process of initiating another cookery experience to produce something that was edible!

Most of the students needed reinforcement of the activities of daily living, such as how to wash hands or brush teeth properly using pictures. Outside, there was a courtyard containing a donated basketball and net, a garden swing bench, a couple of couches and a disused billiard table. In the corner was a large rabbit in a small cage. Alongside the animal wasn?t green vegetables or a carrot but a bowl of cooked rice; I was told this was ?the Chinese way?. Indeed, this is true because rice is the most basic of foods which all Chinese can eat, even those most impoverished, whereas fresh fruit and vegetables are comparatively expensive and not to be frittered on a pet.

I return to the part of Stars and Rain school for pre-school children, where resources are best used by training the parents (usually mothers) how to communicate with their autistic offspring using Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA). The school has a kitchen area, outdoor and indoor play equipment in good order. Parents spend 11 weeks at the school with their children, attending lectures by teachers and being shown how to use ABA. But this costs. They provide their own meals and accommodation. Only those with some money can benefit and they will have waited considerable time on a waiting list for a place.

China03132 403Stars and Rain School, on the very Eastern edge of Beijing, was founded in 1993 by Tian Huiping whose western name is Hope (most Chinese have a western, chosen name). She is the mother of an autistic boy whose determination has seen the school develop from being the first non-governmental organisation for autism with meagre amenities to an established school with support for 3-6 year old children and a few 13-18 year old students. The expectation (or hope) is that these younger children will be given places at local mainstream schools.

Unfortunately there is great stigma attached to autism, especially the more severe end of the spectrum, and it can be seen as bringing shame on the family. School teachers are rarely trained in special educational needs (SEN) and the status of this area of work is low. Stars and Rain provide training conferences for Chinese teachers, which I attended this April. This is actively supported by the U.S. organisation ?Heartspring? which has an exchange program allowing specialised teachers, speech and language therapists and other staff to train Chinese staff.

China03132 388However, Chinese Government policy at national and local level needs to change to embrace SEN and support these children and families to enable children to reach their highest potential. Teacher training and in-service training needs to equip mainstream teachers with the skills to accommodate autistic children in the classroom. Without this movement children on the autism spectrum will continue to be excluded from regular education and remain uneducated, abandoned or institutionalised. The process will be slow and, I would say, can only happen from inside. As China continues its path of industrialisation and economic development, she will feel the pressure of opinion from the rest of the world and from her own citizens to address the needs of the less able, whether this is autism, other special educational needs or other vulnerable groups.

Enterprise Software Development with Java: The Heroes of Java ...

The "Heroes of Java" series is back after a longer break. I'm somehow surprised about this interview. I occasionally run into Kevlin on conferences. And it is amazing to see him on stage. Asking him at last year's JavaZone was simple. Waiting nearly a year for the answers made me believe this is not going to happen. But it did. Thanks Kevlin! "Inbox 2!" :)

Kevlin Henney?

is an author, presenter, and consultant on software development. He has written on the subject of computer programming and development practice for many magazines and sites, including Better Software, The Register, C/C++ Users Journal, Application Development Advisor, JavaSpektrum, C++ Report, Java Report, EXE, and Overload. He is a member of the IEEE Software Advisory Board. Henney is also coauthor of books on patterns and editor of 97 Things Every Programmer Should Know.

General part
Who are you? (Describe yourself in max three sentences)
I am a software development consultant and trainer. I write and speak at conferences. I live in transit, online and, sometimes, at home in Bristol.

Your official job title at your company?
Anything I want it to be! One of the advantages of working for myself. That said, I have no reason to want or use one, so the only official title I've ever used is director, because legally that is what I am.

Do you care about it?
My job title? No. I've worn, worn through and outgrown many job titles, and have not found them to be a particularly useful currency. They are largely an organisational fetish.

Do you speak foreign languages? Which ones?
Yes. I'm part Brazilian, so I can speak and read Portuguese, although not with the fluency I'd like. My grammar and idiom are clumsy, my vocabulary doesn't extend to being able to hold technical conversations and my written skills are appalling! I have modest comprehension of French, German and Spanish, with varying degrees of fluency and incompetence. But I can order wine and beer in more languages than the ones I've just listed.

How long is your daily "bootstrap" process? (Coffee, news, email)
It can be anything from an hour to a whole day.

Twitter
You have a twitter handle? Why?
It's hard to use Twitter effectively without one... [Ed: @KevlinHenney]

Whom are you following in general?
A mix of friends, software developers, speakers, authors, miscellaneous geeks, science sites, news and business sources, writing journals, etc.

Do you have a personal "policy" for twitter?
I try to avoid being negative, so unless I can find humour or something constructive in a complaint, I'm not likely to tweet it. I prefer to stick to matters of technical and geeky interest, which sometimes means science, sometimes means code and sometimes is about one of my other interests, typically creative writing.

Does your company restricts or encourages you with your twitter usage?
I'm very fair with my employee. And my employer is very fair with me.

Work
What's your daily development setup? (OS/IDE/VC/other Tools)
I normally carry a Windows laptop, although I have a few other things lying around at home from tablets to a Chromebook to old laptops in various states of old and odd OSs. Windows 8 is surprisingly good if you're a person who lives by keyboard shortcuts. I don't possess a mouse and I've found the touch screen to be surplus to requirements.

As I don't specialise in developing every day and I deal with different languages in varying amounts, I have a mix of things installed and in use, from Eclipse to Visual Studio, from Java to Python. Some of these are for serious work and some are just for messing around with. An essential feature is some variation of Cygwin for command-line tools, although I also use PowerShell and the Ch shell. When it comes to editors outside the IDE I am likely to be found using Vim, Notepad2 or Notepad++.

Which is the tool providing most productivity to your work?
Realistically, given the number of hours in the day I spend using them, the award for most productive tool is going to go to one of Gmail, Chrome or PowerPoint!

Your preferred way of interacting with co-workers?
As I don't strictly speaking have any co-workers, I guess that my interactions are primarily around courses, workshops, meetings, etc. I prefer face-to-face interaction or email. I don't particularly like the phone and variations on that theme (e.g., Skype). These monopolise time without giving you either the presence and feedback of face-to-face interactions or the precision and asynchronicity of email.

What's your favorite way of managing your todo's?
Crossing them out! Seriously though, I prefer a physical list on A5 paper or index cards, with reminders for time-related events scattered throughout my calendar. I also use my inbox as a to-do list.

If you could make a wish for a job at your favorite company: What would that be?
I'll let you know when I know!

Java
You're programming in Java. Why?
It offers a reasonable object-oriented lingua franca.

What's least fun with Java?
Either the verbosity or the type model.

If you could change one thing with Java, what would that be?
Less the language, more the development model: the reactive, snail's pace evolution of the language.

What's your personal favorite in dynamic languages?
Possibly Python, because of cleanliness, regularity and the proximity of the Pythonic ideal to functional programming. I've used it a little with my children. Without any dressing up in a hand-holding environment it offers a good entry level for non-programmers as well as being powerful and expressive for programmers.

Alternatively, I have a growing appreciation for PowerShell. I've always had a soft spot for shell scripting, and what I've learnt about PowerShell has impressed me. It has made some good design decisions and well considered compromises, leaving it with a regular model and expressive syntax.

And somewhere I will always have a soft spot for Lisp, although I haven't been doing much more than watching the recent renaissance of its family.

Which programming technique has moved you forwards most and why?
In my career and in my thinking there is little doubt that object-oriented programming gave me the greatest boost forward and the most insights, also helping to open up other approaches to programming once I realised the questions I could be asking of any approach. I first started getting into OOP around the time I was programming in Fortran and C, nearly quarter of a century ago.

I really wish more people understood OO, because it would certainly stop them writing most of the Java legacy they are currently creating, and it would make them less surprised by functional programming when they properly understood that approach as well.

What was the biggest project you've ever worked on?
In terms of lines of code and potential effect on everyday life, I guess the biggest may have been a project I worked on many years ago to develop software to monitor and control electric power distribution. I have consulted on and contributed to larger systems, but have not been involved in developing those beyond short-term engagements.

Which was the worst programming mistake you did?
To the best of my knowledge, nothing catastrophic! Which suggests that I have yet to make my greatest programming mistake.

HTC finances improve over last quarter, but show just $41.6 million profit in Q2 2013

HTC picks up the pace with for Q2 with $125 billion in earnings

Though HTC has fallen shy of the $66.7 million in earnings investors were looking for in Q2 2013, at least it's a marked improvement over last quarter's disaster. It managed to improve profits to $41.6 million from a mere $2.8 million last quarter, based on unaudited figures. Revenue also jumped to $2.4 billion over $1.4 billion in Q1, likely due to demand for its flagship One model along with the ability to finally produce it in numbers. However, all that pales over last year's Q2 results, when the company earned $250 million on $3 billion in revenue. According to Reuters, the problems occurred towards the end of the quarter, as sales for June swooned 26.4 percent over Q2 2012 -- a trend it no doubt hopes won't continue for the rest of the year.

General Guide Mohammed Badie, a revered figure among the Brotherhood's followers, spoke Friday before a crowd of tens of thousands of Morsi supporters in Cairo. A military helicopter circled low overhead.

Badie addressed the military, saying "your leader is Morsi" and demanding they abide by their pledge of loyalty to the president, calling it "the honor of the military"

He called on Egyptians to protest, saying "we will not be deterred by threats or detentions ... or the gallows."

"God make Morsi victorious and bring him back to the palace," he said. "We are his soldiers we defend him with our lives."

Obama's new limo to have heavy armor, blood bank, night vision

Check out those thick doors: The Secret Service has commissioned a new limousine for President Barack Obama, one that will be even sturdier than the current one -- a reported 7.5 tons with doors that could thwart an IED.

President Barack Obama is looking for a new ride.

Not that his current limousine ? dubbed ?The Beast? or ?Cadillac One? ? isn?t faring well, but it?s a 2009 model, which he takes wherever he travels, and the Department of Homeland Security says it?s time for an upgrade.

Designed to look like a 2008 Cadillac DTS, The Beast is a hybrid that reportedly blends Caddy components with the guts of a Chevrolet Kodiak commercial truck ? but with heavy armor. Such heavy armor that the car reportedly weighs 7.5 tons.

The armor includes 8-inch plates capable of stopping an improvised explosive device, or IED, and 5-inch multi-layer windows that make the doors as heavy as those on a 757 jet. The car is sealed against biochemical attacks.

Although details of the presidential limo are classified for security reasons, various reports say that it features James Bond-style options, including a night vision system. It also carries communications gear and, in the trunk, a blood bank matching the president?s type.

Special loops replace door handles, which allow Secret Service agents to hold on when running alongside the car. Goodyear run-flat tires fit into extra-large wheel wells.

Secret Service agents who have specialized training in evasive driving techniques, including a J-turn, pilot the vehicle. The J-turn, taught at the Secret Service training facility outside Washington, D.C., can turn the limo 180 degrees in matter of seconds to escape trouble. (The J-turn is also known as the ?moonshiner?s turn,? based on a signature bootlegger driving maneuver.)

As for which car maker will land the contract, that?s a secret. Ford, Chrysler and GM have alternated as limo providers since 1939.

?We at Cadillac consider it a great honor and responsibility to carry on the tradition of presidential cars,? Cadillac spokesman David Caldwell told Motor Trend. ?There?s absolutely nothing we would say directly about the future. The Presidential Limousine is built to an exacting set of specifications ? and one of the specifications is that we not discuss inner workings of the project.?

The new limo promises to be even sturdier than The Beast. According to FedBizOpps.gov, work on the New Design Armored Limousine ?will include concept development, armor design, initial automotive component selection and chassis development, material testing, armor system modeling and simulation, and armor system fabrication and testing (live fire).?

1899-president: Presidential vehicles evolve

Obama?s current Cadillac is a significant upgrade ? at least from the standpoint of safety and communications capabilities ? from cars used by earlier presidents.

William McKinley was the first president to ride in an automobile in November 1899, though Teddy Roosevelt was the first to commission a government-owned car, a white convertible Stanley Steamer. (William Howard Taft, Roosevelt?s successor, also opted for a Steamer when he converted the White House stables into a garage.)

Franklin Delano Roosevelt rode in the specially built "Sunshine Special.? It was based on a Lincoln K-Series chassis with a V-12 engine. It was aptly named as FDR preferred to ride around with the top down.

Those early limos were convertibles, a favorite for politicians at all levels who knew the value of being seen by their constituents. But that was to change forever on Nov. 22, 1963.

As far back as 1954, a nervous Secret Service had developed a protective bubble-top for President Dwight D. Eisenhower?s limousine. There was one available for the Lincoln that his successor, John F. Kennedy, was riding in that fateful afternoon in Dallas, Texas. But Kennedy liked being seen by the public ? which made it easier for assassin Lee Harvey Oswald to fire a series of deadly shots from the Texas Book Depository near Dealey Plaza.

That midnight blue 1961 stretch Lincoln Continental was pulled from service, rebuilt and returned to the White House fleet ? though it is today on display at the Henry Ford, a suburban Detroit museum. Among the updates available to President Lyndon Johnson was a bulletproof hardtop and additional body armor. The vehicle remained in service through the Nixon Administration.

The cruel realities of the world revealed by the Kennedy assassination changed the design of presidential limos ? and for vehicles used by political leaders worldwide.

Problems do occur, however, as when the diesel-powered Beast broke down at Israel's Ben-Gurion Airport after someone mistakenly filled it with the wrong type of fuel. But such incidents are rare ? and there was a backup limousine available.

Feeling Nostalgic? Shoebox Lets You Scan Old Photos With Your ...

Shoebox, the mobile photo archiving app Ancestry.com acquired from San Francisco-based 1000memories last fall, has now gone live at its new home. The updated version of the app, Shoebox 3.0, still allows users to scan in their old non-digital prints ? you know, those things the old folks still refer to as ?photographs? ? while also cropping and auto-flattening the images for the correct perspective. But now, those photos are no longer in their own, more isolated social networking site, as they were when hosted by 1000memories. Instead, the photos can be mapped, tagged and added to your family tree at Ancestry.com.

Founded back in 1983 as a publishing company, Ancestry.com went online in 1996, making it one of the older web properties among the big-name family research sites ? a group which also includes competitors such as?MyHeritage.com and Geni, for example.

shoebox2An app for scanning in old photos, like Shoebox, makes sense as a part of a larger service like Ancestry.com, but unfortunately, some of the features that made Shoebox ?more interesting on mobile have disappeared in the new app version. 1000memories allowed users to fill virtual collections (?shoeboxes?) of their old photo scans, then tag them and share with others, as well as post them to other social sites like Facebook.

Those earlier scanned in photos didn?t seem to transfer over to the new mobile application, though they?re still live on the 1000memories.com domain. In other words, the updated version of Shoebox serves mainly as a utility to scan in items to Ancestry.com, instead of as a mobile, social network of its own.

That being said, Ancestry does have a few other things in the works that take advantage of all those earlier photo uploads from the startup?s users. The company plans to integrate the old 1000memories photo memories into Ancestry.com as a new photos experience, and it will also soon be introducing a new way to tell visual stories that?s far more modern and compelling than those you can make today with the somewhat outdated tools the site and others like it currently offer. (Here?s one example.)

Brett Huneycutt, 1000memories co-founder, now Director of Product at Ancestry, tells us that Shoebox is only the first step in integrating the two companies? products. Later this month, the above-described ?Story View? feature will go live, and in August, the site will debut the new photos experience as well.

shoeboxThough the pace of our culture today is so fast that we have to download time traveling apps like Everpix and Timehop that pull out photos from our exponentially growing photo archives in order to force us to stop and reflect, Ancestry?s whole network is about reflecting on our past. But even though that?s something I?m personally interested in as the inheritor of my grandmother?s photo collection (which now fills actual ?shoeboxes? in my closet), using these older ancestry research websites hasn?t held much appeal for me.

Having spent my years uploading and tagging photos on more ?youthful? sites like Facebook or Flickr, I?d like to see?a research site that could reach me with a simple, modern, and more automated experience on the platforms I use the most ? smartphone and tablet. That was my hope for 1000memories and Shoebox, but though the mobile app itself is now faster and more streamlined since the update, it has also lost that sense of being something that could stand on its own and engage.

From solemn to spectacular, July 4th celebrated

NEW YORK (AP) ? From solemn to spectacular, the nation marked its independence with the reopening of the Statue of Liberty for the first time since Superstorm Sandy, extravagant fireworks that included a 19-burst salute to Arizona's fallen firefighters and a musical tribute in Washington to those affected by the Boston Marathon bombing.

"I always love July Fourth and I'm very happy to be in this country, I know I'm blessed," said 15-year-old Yoana Lorenzo, who was among the millions who watched the New York City's over-the-top Fourth of July Fireworks show Thursday night. "To see all these people come together and celebrate, it's pretty great."

Four barges carrying 40,000 shells on the Hudson River unleashed a barrage of brilliant reds, whites and blues ? some in shapes and smiley faces ? as spectators marveled at the famed New York fireworks display, snapping videos and pictures on their cellphones.

Earlier Thursday, hundreds lined up to be among the first to board boats destined for Lady Liberty, which opened for the first time since it was shuttered by Sandy. Among them was New Yorker Heather Leykam, whose mother's home was destroyed during the storm.

"This, to us, Liberty Island, is really about a rebirth," said Leykam, who was with her family. "It is a sense of renewal for the city and the country. We wouldn't have missed it for the world."

In Prescott, Ariz., celebrations were more subdued.

A fire chief read the names of the 19 firefighters killed last weekend battling a wildfire, while 19 single fireworks burst overhead.

"Less than 100 hours ago, the city of Prescott, the state of Arizona and the nation lost 19 of the best, the bravest firefighters ever dispatched into the forest," fire department division chief Don Devendorf said.

The commemorative starbursts were followed by a raucous 20-minute display choreographed to patriotic pop songs, which drew cheering, grins and shouts of "America!"

Also, 19 candles burned beneath red, white and blue bunting, at Bistro St. Michael on Whiskey Row in the old West town ? one for each firefighter.

In California, more than two dozen people were injured when a wood platform holding live fireworks tipped over, sending the pyrotechnics into a crowd in Simi Valley, northwest of Los Angeles. Officials said 20 people were taken to hospitals with minor to moderate injuries, and eight more were treated at the park. A bomb squad was at the park to deactivate the remainder of the fireworks.

In Washington, thousands gathered on the National Mall to ring in the Fourth of July with fireworks and music. Neil Diamond sang "Sweet Caroline" in tribute to victims and survivors of the April 15 Boston Marathon bombing. The song is a Fenway Park tradition, and Diamond performed it there in the aftermath of the attack.

Boston hosted its first large gathering since the marathon bombing that killed three and injured hundreds. While attendance for the city's celebration appeared to be down early, it increased as the start of the festivities approached. Crowds on the Charles River Esplanade seemed smaller than in recent years, while a robust law enforcement presence greeted revelers gathering for a performance by the Boston Pops and a fireworks display.

Among those at Boston's festivities was Carlos Arredondo, the cowboy hat-wearing marathon attendee who became part of one of the indelible images of the bombings' aftermath in a photo showing him helping rush a badly wounded man from the scene in a wheelchair, his legs torn to pieces.

Arredondo said the July 4 celebration ? an event authorities believe the bombing suspects initially planned to target ? was an important milestone in the healing process, not just for him but also those who were stopping to tell him their own stories from that day.

"I think there's no better place to be," said Arredondo, wearing his cowboy hat and a "Boston Strong" shirt in the marathon's colors of blue and yellow.

Speaking at the reopening of Lady Liberty, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell choked up as she told the crowd she was wearing a purple ribbon in memory of the fallen firefighters.

"Nineteen firefighters lost their lives in the line of duty, and we as a nation stand together," she said through tears.

Liberty Island was decorated with star-spangled bunting, but portions remain blocked off with large construction equipment, and the main ferry dock was boarded up. Repairs to brick walkways and docks were ongoing. But much of the work has been completed since Sandy swamped the 12-acre island in New York Harbor.

The statue itself was unharmed during the storm, but the land took a beating. Railings broke, docks and paving stones were torn up and buildings were flooded. The storm destroyed electrical systems, sewage pumps and boilers. Hundreds of National Park Service workers from as far away as California and Alaska spent weeks cleaning mud and debris.

"It is one of the most enduring icons of America, and we pulled it off ? it's open today," National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis said. "Welcome."

The statue was open for a single day last year ? Oct. 28, the day before Sandy struck. It had been closed the previous year for security upgrades. Neighboring Ellis Island remains closed and there has been no reopening date set.

Nationwide, Philadelphia, Washington and New Orleans hosted large holiday concerts. A Civil War re-enactment commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg drew as many as 40,000 people to Pennsylvania.

Also in New York, throngs of revelers packed Brooklyn's Coney Island to see competitive eating champ Joey Chestnut scarf down 69 hot dogs to break a world record and win the title for a seventh year at the 98th annual Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest. Sonya Thomas defended her title with nearly 37 dogs.

In his weekly radio address from Washington, President Barack Obama urged Americans to work to secure liberty and opportunity for their own children and future generations. The first family hosted U.S. servicemen and women at the White House for a barbeque.

Atlanta and Alaska held holiday runs ? thousands raced up a 3,022-foot peak in Seward. In New Orleans, the Essence Festival celebrated black culture and music along the riverfront.

The celebratory mood turned somber in Oklahoma and Maine with fatal accidents during parades. In Edmond, Okla., a boy died after being run over by a float near the end of the town's LibertyFest parade. In Bangor, Maine, the driver of a tractor in the parade was killed after the vehicle was struck by an old fire truck.

Anti-surveillance protests cropped up in a number of cities on Independence Day, with activists speaking out against recent disclosures that the National Security Agency has been secretly logging people's phone calls and Internet activity. In Philadelphia, more than 100 people marched downtown to voice their displeasure, chanting, "NSA, go away!"

But in Union Beach, N.J., which was destroyed by Sandy, residents had something to celebrate. The working-class town won a party and fireworks contest from the television station Destination America and USA Weekend magazine.

"It's wonderful. Everyone's been so depressed," said Mary Chepulis as she watched a band perform on a stage that stood where the home next to hers had been.

Gregory Lee becomes President of Samsung's US mobile division, Dale Sohn to advise JK Shin

Gregory Lee becomes president of Samsung Telecommunications America

Samsung is shaking up its US mobile efforts: it just appointed Global Marketing Operations head Gregory Lee as the President of Samsung Telecommunications America, effective immediately. The company hasn't explained why it's making such an abrupt swap, but it's bringing outgoing President Dale Sohn back to South Korea as an Executive Advisor to mobile division CEO JK Shin. This may amount to a promotion -- when much of Samsung's recent success in smartphones is based on its American presence, Sohn's advice could carry a lot of weight.

DNP Left 4 Dead 2 mutates beyond Linux beta, adds more mod tools

Left 4 Dead 2 is the latest game in Valve's catalog to clamber out of the Steam for Linux beta. Unlike last week's Half-Life 2 news however, the extra something coming along for the ride isn't VR headset support -- it's a powerful suite of customization tools. The Extended Mutation System (EMS) gives the already robust modding community additional options for crafting one-off episodes and game type variants. For a glimpse of what EMS enables, play a round of "Holdout." This new multi-map mode introduces buildable items and the concept of resources to the co-op zombie-slaying calamity. What's more, Valve said it will add the most popular EMS creations to the official servers. Maybe with this, the world can finally witness our vision of the zombie apocalypse. Yeah, it involves marmosets.
