MAKING A STATEMENT:

Call them the fantastic four. Or maybe the final four in the race for No. 1.

Alabama, Oregon, Kansas State and Notre Dame hold the top four spots in The Associated Press college football poll released Sunday.

The Crimson Tide is No. 1 for the ninth straight week and the Ducks are No. 2 for the sixth consecutive week.

The third-ranked Wildcats and fourth-ranked Fighting Irish each moved up a spot after Florida lost 17-9 to Georgia. That dropped the Gators from third to eighth.

The BCS standings came out later Sunday and Alabama was first again, but Kansas State and Notre Dame followed with Oregon fourth.

The Tide, Ducks, Wildcats and Irish will spend the last month of the regular season competing against each other from a far, vying for two spots in the BCS national championship game. All of them could get to Dec. 2, BCS selection day, unbeaten.

The finish line is now in sight, but no peeking.

"It's tough not to, knowing you're so close, but man, you just have to focus in on next week, focus in on next game," K-State wide receiver Chris Harper said after the Wildcats' 55-24 victory against Texas Tech. "It's really hard not to look ahead, but the position that we're in, you can't do it."

Alabama and Oregon both face big tests Saturday. Emerging Heisman trophy contender AJ McCarron and the Tide go to Baton Rouge, La., to face No. 5 LSU in a game that could decide the SEC West.

The Pac-12's game of the year was supposed to be Saturday as well. The Ducks will be at No. 18 Southern California, but the Trojans are coming off their second loss of the season. USC fell 39-36 at Arizona and hasn't looked much like a team that started the season No. 1.

Still, Matt Barkley and crew figure to provide some resistance to an Oregon team that has yet to enter the fourth quarter of a game with the result in doubt.

Kansas State is home against Big 12 rival Oklahoma State. Notre Dame, coming off a 30-13 victory at Oklahoma, takes on Pittsburgh in South Bend, Ind.

A BCS mess looms. Alabama's position as No. 1 is safe as long as the defending national champions keep winning. The other three will jockey for the position behind the Tide, and voters (both in the AP poll and the two used in the BCS standings) will parse scores and schedules, looking for the slightest flaws to separate the Ducks, Wildcats and Irish.

Good luck with that.

___

MOVING UP

Dismissed after getting thumped at South Carolina, No. 7 Georgia moved up five spots in the latest rankings and moved into position to win a second straight SEC East title.

The Bulldogs put together by far their best defensive performance of the season against the Gators. It really came out of nowhere. Georgia, with a lineup full of future NFL draft picks, had been allowing more than 200 yards per game on the ground over its last three.

All-American linebacker Jarvis Jones, who has been slowed by injuries, was spectacular with 13 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles. Florida ran for only 81 yards.

Georgia needs to beat Mississippi and Auburn to book a trip to the Southeastern Conference title game for the sixth time in 12 seasons under coach Mark Richt. Yes, the Bulldogs have benefited from a favorable schedule the past two seasons, missing the best teams from the SEC West. But you can only play the teams on your schedule and Georgia has beaten almost all of them.

Still, many Bulldogs fans have been exasperated by their team and coach in recent seasons. Georgia hasn't won the SEC since 2005, and while Florida, Alabama, Auburn and LSU have won the last six national titles, Georgia hasn't won any.

That's a high standard to meet, but that's where the bar is set for the top SEC programs these days.

___

MOVING DOWN

USC, now that's a disappointing team.

Even after losing at Stanford in September, the Trojans were No. 10 with a chance to work their way back into the national title race. Another sloppy performance led to their second loss of the season.

The Trojans had more than 600 yards, including 493 passing by Barkley, against Arizona. Star receiver Marqise Lee had 16 catches for a Pac-12 record 345 yards. But USC committed five turnovers and 13 penalties and let a 15-point, second-half lead slip away.

Coach Lane Kiffin's talented team has been its own worst enemy all season. USC is the most penalized team in the country, averaging 10.3 per game for 84.6 yards. The Trojans are tied for 94th in the nation with 18 giveaways.

The irony is USC will still be front and center in the national championship chase.

The Trojans play Oregon on Saturday, and finish their regular season on Nov. 24 at home against Notre Dame. The Trojans still control their destiny in the Pac-12 South, and could reach the conference title game, possibly for a rematch with Oregon.

Playing spoiler, however, is not what the Trojans had in mind this season.

___

IN AND OUT

From undefeated to unranked.

Rutgers pulled off that trick with a ghastly performance at home against Kent State.

The Scarlet Knights committed seven turnovers and the Golden Flashes won 35-23 for the Mid-American Conference's fourth victory this season against the Big East. For the second straight week, a ranked and unbeaten Big East team lost to a MAC team. Last week, it was Cincinnati losing at Toledo.

Rutgers, which only had six turnovers coming into the game, had been ranked 18th.

The silver lining for the Scarlet Knights is they are still very much in play for their first Big East championship. They play Army next week before finishing the season against Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and No. 12 Louisville.

The Big East didn't have much chance of sending a team to the national title game, but those nonconference loses have taken some of the luster off what was set to be an intriguing league race.

Elsewhere in the MAC, Ohio University also went from unbeaten to unranked. The Bobcats, ranked for the first time since 1968, lost 23-20 to league rival Miami of Ohio.

MAC teams Toledo (8-1, 5-0), Kent State (7-1, 4-0), Northern Illinois (8-1, 5-0) and Ohio (7-1, 3-1) all received votes in the latest AP Top 25.

Also falling out of the rankings was Michigan. Moving back in was No. 21 Nebraska, No. 24 Arizona and No. 25 UCLA.

___

FROM THE ARCHIVES

Louisville has not been ranked this high since it reached No. 8 early in the 2007 season, the year after Bobby Petrino coached the Cardinals to the Orange Bowl, and then bolted for the NFL.

Louisville fell out of the rankings in September 2007, and didn't get back in until the start of this season.

___

ODDS AND ENDS

Newly ranked Arizona and UCLA play at the Rose Bowl on Saturday. ... No. 16 Texas A&M is at No, 17 Mississippi State. The Bulldogs, who were trounced by Alabama 38-7 on Saturday, will try to avoid a two-game losing streak after starting the season 7-0.

Police seek gunman, motive in LA family shooting

DOWNEY, Calif. (AP) ? As police searched for a gunman who killed three people and critically wounded two others in suburban Los Angeles, friends and neighbors of the family targeted in the attack grappled for answers on Thursday.

Authorities have been mum regarding a motive for the shootings and haven't identified a suspect.

The gunman doesn't appear to be a former employee, friend or family member, Downey police Lt. Dean Milligan said. Police, however, say they don't believe the killings were a random act of violence.

Authorities are still looking for a stolen black Camaro, which they say the suspect used to get away after the shootings.

Police have not identified the five victims, but a portrait began to emerge of a tight-knit family who threw large parties and ran a successful company.

Prayer candles and flowers were left at the home and nearby business where the shootings took place. A sign decorated with pink hearts and flowers was left outside the house, reading "RIP Susana, to a great mother."

Workers returned to the industrial strip where the first shots were fired at the small family-owned fire extinguisher company.

"This is absolutely heartbreaking," said Dean Wright, who owns the septic supply business next door. "The guy who did this had to be absolutely crazy."

Richard Mercado, 36, a family friend, said he grew up with the two brothers who ran United States Fire Protection Services Inc., which sells professional firefighting gear and equipment.

Property records show the business is owned by Robert Salinas, 35, and the house is owned by Antonio Salinas, 34. Attempts to reach anyone at either location were unsuccessful and others associated with the family refused to talk when reached by phone.

Mercado said the siblings made a lot of money with the business and that they also liked to buy and sell motorcycles and cars.

"If they saw money to be made they would invest in it," Mercado said. "They always had extra money."

Police said the deadly encounter began around midday Wednesday and that someone called from the business to reporting a shooting.

A few minutes after police arrived, a 13-year-old boy called dispatchers from the family house just down the street, authorities said, where the second shooting happened.

The gunman fled in a 2010 black Camaro that is registered to Maria Fuentes, the mother of the business owners. Wright said she was shot in the face at the business and survived. The other survivor is the teenage boy, Wright said. Authorities said the two survivors of the shooting are in critical condition.

A female secretary and a male employee were killed at the business, according to Wright. At the family's home, the shooter killed the wife of one of the brothers, he said.

The woman and teenager were originally at the business, but somehow got to the home in the Camaro before being shot, according to police. Police don't know whether they drove themselves or were kidnapped by the suspect.

There was no sign of forced entry at either location and police believe the suspect spoke with the victims at both locations before the shooting began. The teen victim, however, did not recognize the gunman, Milligan has said.

The house is a duplex facing foreclosure in a process that began last December, according to real estate records. The property was scheduled to be auctioned Nov. 26 with an asking price of about $837,000.

Lizzy Bonilla, who recently moved in across the street, said she was at home at the time of the shooting and didn't hear any gunfire or commotion until police arrived.

Bonilla, 19, said the family had large parties, most of the time during the day, which was accompanied by Mexican music.

"They had party buses leaving from their property," she said. "They were a big family, and they looked like they were always having fun."

Mercado, the family friend, said he's been trying to reach one of the brothers who had been in Mexico this week but has been unsuccessful. He questioned why trouble would find its way to his friends.

"They ran their business like everyone else," he said. "But maybe they did something wrong and it caught up with them."

Esri Teams with AAG and UCGIS to Reissue Key GIS Reference Book

October 23, 2012

GIS Reference Book Reissued by Esri, AAG, and UCGIS

Redlands, California? With support from Esri and the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS), the Association of American Geographers (AAG) has reprinted 2,000 copies of Geographic Information Science and Technology Body of Knowledge (BoK).

"The BoK is a very important reference book about the geospatial field and is immensely useful to educators," says Michael Goodchild, professor emeritus of geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara. "I'm excited that the AAG, Esri, and UCGIS have come together to make it widely available and easily accessible."

Originally published in 2006, the BoK is the first comprehensive attempt to inventory the knowledge and abilities that comprise the field of geospatial technology. Building on the efforts of Duane Marble, Professor Emeritus of Geography at The Ohio State University, and colleagues to develop a model curriculum for geographic information science and technology education, the UCGIS Education Committee (with support from Esri and AAG) organized contributions from more than 70 GIS scholars and practitioners to produce the book.

AAG will distribute these new copies at no charge to attendees at its national events in 2013. Esri is also providing a free downloadable version of the book at esri.com/gist-bok.

"Esri is pleased to support the reprinting and open access distribution of the BoK," says David DiBiase, Esri director of education and lead editor. "We look forward to broad community participation in the development of a second edition."

UCGIS researchers are currently working on National Science Foundation-funded research to develop an interactive version of the second edition of the book.

Indochina: Wanderings in South East Asia's battered backpacking trail

Uber cheap flight tickets, booked one year in advance, kicked-off my dream of finally embarking on a 10-week trip to Indochina. This well-trodden backpacking trail passes through countries located in the mainland part of South East Asia such as Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar.

I didn?t have much time to plan any concrete itinerary or schedule. I even packed for the long trip a few hours before I left home. I knew traveling around the main tourist sites in Indochina would be easy because of its legendary popularity among backpackers. It?s definitely one of those places where you?re better off not over-planning.

Indochina: Wanderings in South East Asias battered backpacking trail
Photo summary of my 10-week trip around Indochina. An overload of ancient ruins, breathtaking natural scenery, temple-hopping marathons,?history lessons, and?intact cultural traditions.

Weeks before the trip, instead of planning and getting excited on amazing places I?ll be visiting, I spent unhealthy amounts of sleepless nights in front of the PC trying my best to recover from a recent major financial loss. Pushing through with my planned travels for the rest of the year was the least of my concerns. I was scared a big dent in my savings could make it even harder for me to continue living this digital lifestyle I wanted for myself.

My situation thankfully started to improve. I wasn?t earning remotely close to how much I used to (or was used to) but it was, at least, enough to make me feel like there was still hope.

If there was one critical lesson I learned during my travels, it?s listening and trusting your gut feeling. If you have things you really want to do but fear is holding you back, just go for it! Those desires are best satisfied while the fire is still burning.

My 10-week Indochina route itinerary

I started with an overnight layover in Malaysia since I booked flights with AirAsia, which only flew to Kuala Lumpur or Kota Kinabalu (at the time). I meant to start my trip in the Thai City of Chiang Mai. It was my homebase for 3-weeks before I traveled around the rest of Northern Thailand for the remainder of my 30-day visa.

I crossed overland to Laos. Traveled southwards for a little over two weeks then crossed the border to Cambodia. Vietnam was so close, I wasn?t able to resist a quick 3-day side trip :)

Before the month was over, I backtracked to explore more of Cambodia then headed to Bangkok to catch a flight to Myanmar where I spent the last two but very memorable weeks of the trip.

Business commitments to customers

Due to the contemporary economic and atmospheric climate restrictions, homeowners have begun taking on simple home projects to save money and improve their current storage or home space. Most people have begun sprucing up in preparation for enlisting their homes on the arcade.

Despite the purpose, a fresh coat of paint relics ways of completing tasks. Whatever the colour, homemakers continue to make their homes a comfortable healthy environment to live in. We love the idea of spending money on expensive luxurious items now and again. With the richness of online home d?cor and interior design blogs, there is a certain amount of style inspiration and design tips to be chosen and used.

Most people are unsure of how they can go about decorating their homes. It is easy and simple to look at magazines, websites and blogs like Homes Suite Homes to get a few ideas. Make a scrapbook. Making a scrap book will help give most people an idea of how their homes will look. Being brave is very important.

If the lack of creativity is a problem then try making the biggest piece of furniture the centre of attention and make everything else look simple. If money is tight, then comparing prices will be a good idea. For a small room, try minimizing the approach or the room will end up looking cluttered. Hiring a professional home d?cor or an interior designer isn?t necessary just because having a fancy home seems to the best thing.

By viewing several home d?cor or interior design items, one following the next, a person may be inspired or may come up with an idea as to how he?d want to design his home. There have been times where looking at a catalogue full of photos of various rooms or an entire house designed may give a homeowner or homemaker an idea as to how the entire house will look. Looking at a country style home or a modern luxurious bachelor pad will make a person happy looking at a catalogue with various ideas to begin with.

Bend OR Bust: Stop Realtors from increasing property taxes

A No vote on Measure 79 ensures that property taxes won't escalate even faster than they should.

Realtor organizations in Oregon and nationwide have pumped in close to $5 million promoting an initiative that is completely bogus.

There is no real estate transfer tax and no plans to enact a statewide transfer tax, which is imposed on sales of real estate.

Real estate agents rake in a ridiculous cut, up to 7 percent, on each sale of a home. A real estate transfer tax cuts into the Realtors' profit so they are vehemently against it.

A real estate transfer tax, if we ever had one, would be worthwhile because it would help temper the extreme spikes in the marketplace. Realtors helped cause the real estate market meltdown because they participated either directly or indirectly in the speculation game. Some real estate agents, like Deschutes County Commission candidate, Tom Greene, gambled big and lost big. That's why he is running for a job that pays double the state average. He needs the dough.

But, there is no real estate transfer tax and likely never will be.

We shouldn't, though, take the option off the table. Measure 79 prohibits any local government from ever enacting one, even if it would benefit the community.

By not having the option to diversify or broaden the tax base, it leaves property taxes as the only avenue for revenue. And, when that happens, property owners become rightfully irritated and tend to vote no on local bond measures even ones that would be in their best interests to pass.

And, when property owners vote no often enough, the community suffers in the long term.

When the community suffers, so do property values. When property values decline, so do the incomes of Realtors.

Don't let Realtors and their deep pocket organizations destroy our communities.

Vote NO on Measure 79.

Smoke forces plane evacuation in Turkey

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Passengers, some in a panic, were evacuated from a plane at Turkey's Antalya airport early Sunday after crew members reported smoke inside the cockpit, airline officials and state media said. Three passengers were slightly injured during the evacuation, while 25 were affected by the smoke.

The Trondheim, Norway-bound Boeing 737-800 plane, with 189 passengers and seven crew members on board, was readying for take-off around 4 a.m. local time (0100 GMT) when the crew detected the smoke and the captain ordered the evacuation, according to a statement from the Antalya-based Corendon Airlines.

Three passengers sustained slight hand and leg injuries during the evacuation, while another 25 who were affected by smoke that spread from the cockpit were under observation in a hospital, company spokesman Can Daglioglu told The Associated Press.

The state-run Anadolu news agency reported panic among passengers during the evacuation. Most of the passengers were flown to Trondheim aboard another Corendon Airlines-operated plane, but four chose to stay in Antalya, Daglioglu said.

It was not known what caused the smoke, Corendon said, adding that Boeing technicians would inspect the plane, which has been withdrawn from service.

The Antalya airport serves several resorts along Turkey's Mediterranean coast that are popular with tourists from northern Europe and Russia.

Want to get the creative juices flowing? Let your mind wander | The ...

Synopsis

Whether at work, school, or in everyday life, we often encounter situations where thinking outside-the-box is necessary. But, these sparks of insight can be somewhat hard to pin down. You just never know when creative thought will arise. Fortunately, new research has uncovered the very conditions that give rise to creativity.

There is no denying it, whether at work, school, or in everyday life, we often encounter situations where thinking outside the box is necessary. It?s also true that sparks of insight can be somewhat hard to pin down. You just never know when creative thought will arise.

Fortunately, new research published in the journal Psychological Science changes this. Psychologists at the University of California, Santa Barbara have uncovered the very conditions that give rise to creative thought. As the researchers point out, there are countless anecdotal accounts of creativity happening when people take a break from whatever they are working on. The question, however, is whether any sort of break sparks creative thought or whether there is a certain type of activity that is best to perform during the break period. The answer, it turns out, is the latter. When stuck on a problem that needs a creative solution, turning your attention to another task that requires just a little bit of focus (but not too much) is the best way to jump start the creative process.

The UC Santa Barbara researchers began by having university undergraduate volunteers solve the Unusual Uses Task (UUT). The goal of the UUT is to generate as many unusual uses for a common object, say a brick, in a few minutes time. People are graded on the number of unique uses they generate and the originality of response ? an index of creativity thinking.

Next, volunteers were randomly assigned to one of three incubation conditions where, during a 12 minute break period, they did something unrelated to the UUT. People either (1) performed a demanding memory task requiring them to juggle multiple items in their head at once ? demanding group; (2) did an undemanding task where they were simply asked to respond to a signal that popped up on the computer screen every so often ? undemanding group; or (3) sat and rested ? rest group. Then everyone tried their hand at the UUT again. A fourth group (no break group) went straight into the second round of the Unusual Uses Task.

So what did the researchers find? Volunteers in the undemanding group showed a significant improvement in their ability to generate new uses for the objects from their first to second UUT attempt ? improving in their generation by about 40%. In contrast, people in the demanding group, the rest and no rest groups showed no improvement in their creative thinking.

But, here?s where the results get really interesting. Everyone filled out a self-report measure of mind wandering during the incubation period. The researchers wanted to know how often volunteers engaged in thoughts unrelated to the creativity task, like personal worries or future and past events. And, when they analyzed these reports, what they found was that people?s thoughts in the undemanding task group were much more likely to wonder off-task. And, the more people had a propensity to mind wander in general, the more creative they were.

The legendary Greek philosopher, Archimedes, may have been the first to demonstrate the power of taking a break. Asked to determine whether or not a new crown made for the King was solid gold, Archimedes was stumped. He couldn?t melt down the crown or break it open to determine its contents because that would destroy it. And because the crown was in the irregular shape of a laurel wreath, there was no object of a similar shape to which to compare it. Interestingly, ?Archimedes didn?t come up with the answer until he stepped back from his task and stopped thinking about it altogether. As Archimedes was getting into the bath one day, he noticed that the level of water rose as he got in. He figured out that he could use the amount of water displaced by an object (either himself or the crown) to determine its volume and, with a little math, it?s density (whether the crown had dense gold or a less-dense silver inside). According to tradition, Archimedes was so excited by his ?ah-hah? moment that he forgot to get dressed after he got out of the bath and ran through the streets naked yelling, ?Eureka!?

Now we know that it?s not just any break that gets our creative juices flowing. Rather, when we are stuck on a problem and need an outside-the-box solution, turning to an activity that engages our attention just slightly so that mind wandering is maximized is the answer. Maybe it?s a walk in the woods, surfing the sports scores, or even a bath that does it. Regardless, uncovering the conditions under which our most creative ideas will arise can help us function at our best.

Getting More Out of Your Social Media Marketing Campaign - AddMe

Just this month Facebook announced it had reached 1 billion users. The high level of involvement on social media sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Google+ is a great opportunity for online marketing success. However, like anything else it needs to be done properly. Brands can use social media marketing to connect with their consumers and increase brand awareness and social profiles are a good place to share content and attract new visitors and newsletter subscribers. Businesses need to keep an active presence on social media, but they need to have a plan of action to get the most out of their social media efforts.

Here are some tips to help get more value from your social media marketing efforts:

Strategize
Social media marketing is not something that can be done in one afternoon. It also isn?t a ?set and forget? method of communication. Highly effective social networking is the result of a strong and organized social media marketing strategy. Plan your social media marketing like you would your traditional marketing efforts. Define the goals you want to achieve through social media (i.e. increased traffic to your website, an improved conversion rate, etc.) and develop a strategy to accomplish said goals.

Create Calls to Action
Some businesses manage to attract a sizable amount of followers who become passive social media subscribers. While having 1,000 Facebook Fans is great, what?s their real value if they don?t interact with your brand? When you post content on your social profiles, you want to include a call to action to get your followers engaged. Instead of just posting your latest blog article or sharing a YouTube video, go one step further and ask them to leave comments or questions to keep the conversation going. What are their opinions, insights or feelings? Just be prepared to handle any and all feedback you may get! If you want to keep your social fans involved you can?t ask them to act and then ignore them.

Make Social Sharing Easy
Social sharing buttons allow your followers to easily share your content without having to leave your website. The more times a piece of content is shared the more valuable it becomes and, the more attention it is likely to get. You want to create numerous opportunities for sharing with the least amount of effort on the part of the reader. Make it easy! A social sharing button lets your followers share your content on their social media networks with a click of their mouse. More shares also allow you to attract more followers as you content is introduced to a wider network.

Share from Others
They call it ?social? media for a reason! If you are using social media solely to promote your own content, you are limiting the long term potential of your profile. Don?t be afraid to share content from other reputable sources. Not only does sharing content from others help diversify what you are promoting on your own social channels, it helps build a rapport with other industry leaders. Everyone loves a little social love and you never know what kind of thanks you?ll get in return for sharing someone else?s content. If you are prepared to handle it, you can even ask your followers to submit their own content. Some of the most successful social media campaigns have been the result of user generated content.

Measure Results
How do you know if your social media marketing is paying off? Check your analytics. See how your social efforts on Facebook, Twitter, and other sites are driving visitors to your website. Look at what types of content are getting the most amounts of ?likes? and shares (although don?t get so pigeonholed by the numbers you miss the big picture). Keep in mind that content can go ?viral? without hitting millions of shares. If your content normally gets a dozen re-tweets and your latest post got 100 consider that a big success! Measuring your social analytics lets you gauge which networks are the most effective by their levels of engagement. Use this information to better tailor your social media strategy going forward.

(AP) ? A Dallas woman who beat her 2-year-old daughter and glued the toddler's hands to a wall because she was struggling with potty training was sentenced Friday to 99 years in prison.

Family members in the courtroom sobbed loudly as the judge announced Elizabeth Escalona's punishment. Escalona pleaded guilty in July to felony injury to a child, but her mother and sister had asked the court for leniency on her behalf.

Dallas County prosecutor Eren Price said the 23-year-old mother of five had not taken responsibility for her actions.

"Elizabeth lies to hide the evil," Price said.

Escalona's other children told authorities that their mother attacked Jocelyn Cedillo in September 2011 due to potty training problems. Police say she kicked her daughter in the stomach, beat her with a milk jug, then stuck her hands to an apartment wall with an adhesive commonly known as Super Glue.

Jocelyn suffered bleeding in her brain, a fractured rib, multiple bruises and bite marks, and was in a coma for a couple of days, a doctor testified at the sentencing hearing. Some skin had been torn off her hands, where doctors also found glue residue and white paint chips from the apartment wall.

"On Sept. 7, 2011, you savagely beat your child to the edge of death," State District Judge Larry Mitchell said. "For this you must be punished."

Jocelyn has since recovered and her grandmother now cares for her along with Elizabeth Escalona's four other children, including a baby born this year.

Prosecutors portrayed Escalona as an unfit mother with a history of violence. They played recordings in which Escalona as a teenager threatened to kill her mother. They said she had been a gang member and that she started smoking marijuana at age 11.

"Only a monster glues her daughter's hands to the wall," Price said during the hearing.

Escalona asked for leniency, telling the judge she was no longer the monster who committed the attack. "I will never forgive myself for what I did to my own daughter," she said.

Escalona had faced from probation to life in prison. Prosecutors initially sought a 45-year sentence, but during closing arguments Price said she wanted Escalona to be sentenced to life in prison.

Defense attorney Angie N'Duka repeated that Escalona was not a monster and that she was deserving of probation or a short sentence.

"She is no monster. She can be redeemed. She can be helped," N'Duka said during closing arguments.

N'Duka said Escalona asked, "What about my children?" after the sentence was announced.

Price said Escalona will be eligible for parole in 30 years. N'Duka said she plans to appeal.

Escalona's family has acknowledged their dismay and anger following the attack, but her sister and her mother nonetheless asked the judge for leniency.

A counselor, Melanie Davis, testified that her sessions with Escalona indicated the young mother loved all of her children and that she would benefit from more counseling. Davis said Escalona has set herself the short-term goal of finding a job and the long-term aim of getting her children back.

CREVE COEUR, Mo. (KMOV) -- A local family is suing a group of high-risk pregnancy specialists in Creve Coeur after they claim a doctor made a last-minute decision that led to their baby being decapitated.

The young couple says hey used in-vitro fertilization to get pregnant, but the unborn baby developed renal abnormalities that caused its abdomen to become enlarged. The suit claims problems started when the wrong decision was made about how to deliver the baby.?????????????

The birth occurred in March, 2011, but the lawsuit was only filed a few days ago.

The suit was filed against Midwest Maternal - Fetal Medicine?a group of obstetricians that specialize in high-risk births.

According to the lawsuit, the parents and their doctor had agreed that because of the enlarged stomach, a cesarean section would be required to safely deliver the baby.

But the suit claims when the expectant mother was admitted to the hospital, a different doctor in the group wouldn?t agree to a cesarean section and would only do a vaginal birth.

The lawsuit claims that the baby?s enlarged stomach caused the child to be stuck in the birth canal.

According to the lawsuit, the doctor pulled so hard on the baby to get it out that he separated the baby?s head from its spine.

At that point, the lawsuit says, blood went everywhere in the delivery room. The mother was immediately rushed into an operating room. The couple claims during an emergency cesarean section, the doctor completely removed the baby?s head from the rest of its body.

The suit claims that when the doctor presented the deceased infant to the parents, he had put the head back on the body and hid the neck wound. The couple?s attorney says gauze was wrapped around the baby?s neck.

News 4 contacted the Midwest Maternal - Fetal Medicine group to get their reaction to the lawsuit, but no calls were returned.

(AP) ? After a season filled with dramatic comebacks and memorable endings, the Oakland Athletics now expect the unexpected.

Two runs down and three outs away from their season ending, the A's staged their most magical finish yet.

Seth Smith hit a game-tying two-run double off closer Jose Valverde in the ninth inning and Coco Crisp capped Oakland's rally with a two-out RBI single as the A's staved off elimination for a second straight night with a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers in Game 4 Wednesday night.

"We've heard a lot of people say we're not smart enough to know when to lose a game like most people do," said Josh Reddick, who started the rally with a single. "We've been battling till the 27th out all year and we're not going to stop now."

The A's rode a major league-leading 14 walkoff wins in the regular season to an improbable AL West title. Those paled in comparison to No. 15, which set up a win-or-go-home Game 5 against Justin Verlander and the Tigers.

Reddick led off the ninth with a single just under the glove of diving second baseman Omar Infante. Josh Donaldson followed with a double off the wall in left-center and both runners scored on Smith's double.

"There's a confidence," manager Bob Melvin said. "We've done it so many times so there's always going to be that confidence until we make that last out."

Two outs later, Crisp lined a single and Smith scored easily when right fielder Avisail Garcia couldn't handle the ball.

That set off a raucous celebration near first base as the A's poured out of the dugout to mob Crisp, who was the recipient of a whipped cream pie that became a regular occurrence in this remarkable season in Oakland. This marked the second time the A's erased a two-run deficit in the ninth inning to win a postseason game, the other coming in Game 5 of the 1929 World Series.

"It's amazing," Crisp said. "The guys in front of me obviously did a fantastic job of getting on base. ... This club, we've been battling the whole year, giving 100 percent, and these walkoffs have been our MO this year."

Ryan Cook retired four batters for the win.

The A's, who have the lowest payroll in baseball, need just one more surprising result to win their second postseason series since 1990. Rookie Jarrod Parker will take the mound in Game 5 on Thursday night against Verlander, the reigning AL Cy Young winner and MVP.

"That's why this is the greatest game of all," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "It looked like we were going to get it. We didn't do it. We didn't quite get the 27 outs, that's part of the game. You get tested all the time in this game. And this is a good test."

The Tigers looked to be in prime position to advance to their second straight ALCS and have a rested Verlander for Game 1 when they took a 3-1 lead into the ninth behind a strong start from Max Scherzer and a homer from Prince Fielder.

Now the A's are one win away from repeating last week's three-game sweep of Texas that gave them the AL West title on the final day of the regular season. After losing the first two games in Detroit, the A's won 2-0 in Game 3 and are looking to become the eighth team to rally from two games down to win a best-of-five series.

The San Francisco Giants will have a shot to do it as well earlier Thursday when they face Cincinnati in Game 5 of their NL division series.

Scherzer, who was dealing with shoulder, deltoid and ankle injuries late in the season, looked in top form against the A's. He allowed just one baserunner in the first four innings and struck out seven of the first 15 batters before running into his first trouble in the fifth.

Smith worked a two-out walk and went to third on Derek Norris' opposite-field blooper down the right-field line. But Scherzer responded by getting Cliff Pennington to chase an offspeed pitch in the dirt for his eighth strikeout.

The A's finally got to Scherzer for an unearned run in the sixth. Crisp reached when Fielder misplayed a hard grounder to first base into a two-base error. Crisp advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Stephen Drew's double to right-center. But the A's ran themselves out of a potential big inning when third-base coach Mike Gallego waved Drew around to third, where he was easily caught on the relay for the first out.

Octavio Dotel and Phil Coke both retired a batter to get out of the sixth and Al Alburquerque pitched a perfect seventh in his first appearance since his memorable kiss of the baseball on a comebacker by Yoenis Cespedes in Game 2. Joaquin Benoit escaped a first-and-second jam in the eighth by striking out Brandon Moss, but Valverde couldn't close it.

"This is the toughest moment in my whole career," Valverde said. "I had everything. These guys hit it. There's nothing I can do."

Did Lioness Really Befriend Baby Antelope?

While documenting a lion hunt in Uganda recently, a photographer came across a surprising sight: a lioness seeming to "adopt" a baby antelope after killing and eating its mother.

In photographer Adri De?Visser's photo series of?the incident, which has been reproduced all over the Web in recent days, the lioness nuzzles the tiny, orphaned calf, picks it up by the scruff of its neck and hauls it off "like one of her own cubs," as the Daily Mail put it. According to many media outlets, the lioness's maternal instincts kicked in when confronted with the poor, defenseless youngster.

But is that really what happened?

Far from it. Everybody likes a good story about a lion lying down with a lamb. But in nature, "the lamb always gets eaten," said ecologist Craig Packer, director of the Lion Research Center at the University of Minnesota. "It's quite common for cats to play with their prey and they can look very gentle doing it. But it always ends in tears," he said.

According to Packer, the scene depicted in the photos is familiar to anyone who has studied lions, and to anyone who has ever watched their cat catch a mouse. "These are just variations on the theme of cat-and-mouse, where cats capture their prey and play with it until they either get bored and leave it or get hungry and eat it," he told Life's Little Mysteries.

Lions and other large cats can be surprisingly gentle when playing with young, feeble prey, he noted, but only in order to keep the creature alive and prolong the game of cat-and-mouse. [What Would Happen If a Lion Fought a Tiger?]

Despite being in danger, the baby kob (a type of antelope) in the photos doesn't try to escape the lion. Packer explained that its flight instinct hasn't kicked in yet. Like baby impalas and gazelles, baby kobs are "hiders." While their mothers graze, they hide in the underbrush, staying still and docile to minimize their chance of detection. "So, when they are detected, they just kind of stand around," Packer said. "They don't know how to run away. When they see the lion, they are responding to the presence of a large, warm body."

Perhaps, in this case, the lioness eventually killed and ate the baby kob. Perhaps she got bored before she got hungry, and let the creature wander off and starve to death. "Nobody follows these things so persistently that they can tell you what happens at the end of the encounter," Packer said. "But either way, nature is not 'The Lion King,' with the warthog and all that. This story ended."
