Phoebus, Virginia Tech football, college, high school realignment top 2012 sports stories

People and numbers forge the backbone of sports, in these parts rarely more than during 2012. High school, college and professional. Football, basketball and golf. Men, women and young folk.

At every level and seemingly at every turn sports retained its uncanny ability to entertain, surprise and provoke.

From Phoebus High's unusual coaching transition, to the NCAA Championship Subdivision's first 5,000-yard passing season. From the LPGA Tour's second-longest, sudden-death playoff to the ACC's rapid membership changes. From a hospital bed in Newport News to the medal stand at the London Olympics.

So before ratcheting up your New Year's festivities and forecasting 2013, settle in and relive 2012's top-10 sports stories, as chosen by our staff. On Pages 4-5

1. Phoebus' drive for a record fifth consecutive state football championship encountered an unforeseen hurdle in late September when administrators suspended head coach Stan Sexton, 47-2 in three-plus seasons, following a practice incident in which a player was injured. Defensive coordinator Jeremy Blunt took over on an interim basis, and less than three weeks later, administrators made Sexton's departure permanent. Under Blunt, the Phantoms won their next six games to a complete a 10-0 regular season. But in the third round of the Eastern Region playoffs, Lake Taylor mauled Phoebus 54-0, the Phantoms' worse loss in 27 years. The Titans won the Division 5 state title, the first football state championship for a Norfolk school since Granby in 1966. On Dec. 17, school officials removed the interim tag and hired Blunt full-time. "I've known him ever since I was in elementary school," junior lineman Kevin Lyles said of Blunt. "The guys wanted him back. He's the person we need to get back on track and (win) another state championship."

2. 'Twas a turbulent 2012 for Virginia Tech athletics. First, the school fired basketball coach Seth Greenberg and replaced him with James Johnson, a former Greenberg assistant who had just left for an assistant's position at Clemson. Greenberg's late-April dismissal was unusually timed, lending credence to athletic director Jim Weaver's assertion that the decision had little to do with wins and losses ? the Hokies were 16-17 last season, 170-123 under Greenberg, but made only one NCAA tournament during his tenure. In short, Greenberg chafed many in the athletic department, his staff and Weaver included, and his ultimate mistake was portraying assistants' departure as a reflection of Tech's salaries. As much drama as basketball created, it paled to football, which endured a 7-6 season, its worst record in 20 years. Preseason favorites to win the ACC Coastal Division, the Hokies didn't secure bowl eligibility for the 20th consecutive year until a 17-14 victory over Virginia in the finale. They defeated Rutgers 13-10 on Friday in the Russell Athletic Bowl.

3. Old Dominion's final season as a Football Championship Subdivision program was indelible, in large measure, because of sophomore quarterback Taylor Heinicke. He not only led the Monarchs to the national playoff quarterfinals, but also eclipsed Steve McNair's 18-year-old FCS record for passing yards in a season. Heinicke finished with 5,076 and won the Payton Award, emblematic of FCS' top offensive player. His next challenge is to help ODU's transition to the Bowl Subdivision, an upgrade the school announced in May with its move to Conference USA. Watching Heinicke next season against the likes of Maryland, North Carolina and East Carolina will be curious, indeed.

4. When the ACC welcomed Notre Dame as a football scheduling/bowl partner and full member for other sports in mid-September, the conference's membership appeared set for years, perhaps decades. Two months later, charter member Maryland blindsided its colleagues and the league office by announcing its intention to not only leave for the Big Ten but also to fight the ACC's $52 million exit fee. National media and even Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski pronounced the ACC vulnerable to further defections. Many speculated that Virginia also could be Big Ten-bound, a notion athletic director Craig Littlepage quashed. At year's end, and with Louisville secured to replace Maryland, the ACC again appears solid.

5. Francena McCorory and Kellie Wells missed one another by a year at Hampton University, but they were U.S. Olympic teammates last summer, and each returned from London with hardware. A graduate of Bethel High, McCorory won a gold medal in the 4x400 relay; Wells captured bronze in the 100-meter hurdles. "Coming from Hampton University made me so proud," Wells said during an October celebration at HU, "because it shows you don't have to be from a big SEC school with all the money and big budgets. ? Francena and I had that (Hampton) blue and white through our hearts."

6. Less than a month after former Hampton High basketball standout Gary Smith lost his fight with leukemia, the Crabbers won their first state championship in 15 years, defeating Petersburg 64-51. "Make sure you put in that this was for Monstar," Hampton guard Anthony Barber said afterward, using Smith's nickname. For all the emotion of the Crabbers' postseason run, much drama remained for Peninsula District fans. Specifically, where would Barber, Phoebus' Troy Williams and Woodside's Adrienne Motley elect to attend college in 2013? Each chose programs that resided among the top 25 last season. Barber signed with North Carolina State, Williams, who is finishing his prep career at Oak Hill Academy, with Indiana, and Motley with Miami.

7. Saddled with a September date that conflicted with blanket college football and a NASCAR race in Richmond, the LPGA's return to Kingsmill after a three-year absence figured to struggle for attention. Then Paula Creamer and Jiyai Shin staged the second-longest, sudden-death playoff in tour history, a nine-hole ordeal that spilled into Monday morning after darkness prevailed Sunday night. Eight times the pair dueled over the par-4 18th hole, and eight times each made par. Tournament officials shifted Monday's opening playoff hole to the par-4 16th, where Creamer's 3-putt bogey handed Shin her first victory in two years. Both players exited Virginia quickly for the Women's British Open, which Shin won by a record nine shots.

8. The post-spring practice arrival of former Alabama and prep All-America quarterback Phillip Sims spiced Virginia's preseason to wasabi levels, but coach Mike London and his staff never settled on a coherent strategy or rotation at the game's linchpin position. That led to the Cavaliers' 4-8 season and the subsequent transfer of rising senior Michael Rocco, with whom Sims shared playing time. Virginia's 2-6 ACC record relegated it to last place in the league's Coastal Division for the third time in four years and prompted London to dismiss four assistant coaches, including defensive coordinator Jim Reid.

9. If you think college conference realignment is confusing, try wrapping your arms around the structure the Virginia High School League has adopted for 2013 and beyond. Schools will be divided into six classes, strictly by enrollment with no option to play up. Current districts will remain intact for regular season competition but vanish come postseason, when teams will be divided into smaller conferences of 5-8 schools. Locally, the Peninsula and Bay Rivers Districts will include schools from three classes and conferences, with the changes creating heretofore unimaginable playoff pairings such as Phoebus-Grafton and Denbigh-Jamestown.

10. As coach, administrator and ambassador, C.J. Woollum has been the front porch of Christopher Newport athletics since 1984, when he began a 26-year run as basketball coach that included 502 victories and 17 NCAA Division III tournament appearances. After 25 years as the school's athletic director, a tenure than included the Captains adding football, Woollum stepped down in June to assume an emeritus role. Less than two months later, he underwent surgery in Newport News to remove a cancerous brain tumor. Woollum is back home and undergoing treatments, and in late October gave a wry acceptance speech marking his induction into the Hampton Roads Sports Hall of Fame.

New York: N.Y. agencies told to cut building energy use

Energy honeymoon over

THE honeymoon period for Aurora customers is to come to an end, with electricity disconnections set to more than double in Tasmania in the next 12 months.

Aurora had given Tasmanian customers a four-month amnesty on disconnections as they rolled out a new billing system in the last half of this year.

However, the company has warned it will soon be operating like energy companies in other states, which have been disconnecting customers at a growing rate.

In Victoria, 24,000 households had their power cut off in the past year -- a 33 per cent increase from 2011. Disconnections in South Australia have grown by 38 per cent, Queensland 20 per cent, and New South Wales 25 per cent.

Aurora spokesman Richard Wilson said the company expected 2000 disconnections next year -- double the average of 1000 disconnections a year for the past two years.

Only 226 Aurora customers lost their power in 2011-12 because of the four-month amnesty on disconnections to allow a new billing system to be installed, Mr Wilson said.

Disconnections dropped from 998 in 2010-11 to 226 in 2011-12. Of these, 178 were residential customers and 11 were businesses.

Mr Wilson said making regular payments through a payment plan was the best way to avoid a disconnection.

"Disconnections are the worst outcome for everyone but especially for the customer," he said. "It affects their credit rating and they lose their electricity supply."

Mr Wilson said the company had arranged 2490 payment plans in the last quarter.

The increased disconnections will come as a blow to the State Government, which is set to sell Aurora customers at the end of the year into a full retail contestable market.

Energy expert Frontier Economics director Danny Price told the Mercury in late October concerns about the credit ratings of Aurora customers and Aurora's market monopoly were scaring off energy retailers.

He said the sale of energy customers on the mainland had generated about $1000 to $1500 per customer but Aurora would be lucky to get $300 per customer.

Katt Williams -- Quentin Tarantino Has No Business Using the N ...

Katt Williams
Quentin Tarantino Has No Business Using the N-Word

EXCLUSIVE

1229_katt_williams_QT_videoIn between getting out of jail and getting in the middle of a parking lot brawl, Katt Williams took the time to talk to TMZ about "Django Unchained" ... and threatened to beat the crap out of?Quentin Tarantino if he gets the chance.

Williams didn't voice his opinion in a polite way like Spike Lee did. First he threatened to punch QT in the face, then told us, "Qunetin Tarantino thinks he can say the N-word. But I checked with all of Ni**adom and nobody knows where he got his pass from. I hope he didn't get it from Samuel L. Jackson and Jamie Foxx cause they aren't going to help you when I see you."

When our photog tried to compare QT to Steven Spielberg (who made "Amistad" in 1997), Katt shot back, "Quentin Tarantino is no Steven Spielberg. Steven Spielberg doesn't wanna be black, Quentin Tarantino thinks he is. So when he meets a real ni**a, we'll see if he is or not."

Quentin, you've been warned.

The Customization of the Airbus A380 | Business Travel Blog

It used to be when an airline ordered a new airplane; the options were somewhat limited. They would simply get an airliner with a few first class seats and the remaining seats would be coach. Today, with the growing popularity of business class over first class and technical innovations, airlines are customizing their fleets to fit their passenger?s needs.

The Airbus A380 is one such airliner that has the capacity to carry over 500 passengers with room to spare. Customers of the double deck jumbo jets design their interiors from the ground up from unique seating configurations for business class cabins to including on board duty free shopping. Currently, there are nine carriers that operate the A380, so which airline?s A380 has what?

Emirates Airlines has the largest fleet of A380s. They also have more than just one seating configurations on many of the aircraft. As most of the A380 operators, the lower decks of the airliners are standardly reserved for economy seating, leaving the entire upper deck to be dedicated to first and business class. For long routes, the airline flies one configuration that includes a crew rest area in the aft section of the lower deck, behind economy class. On the shorter routes they use a configuration without the crew rest on the lower deck, allowing for additional economy seating.

China Southern, which was China?s first A380 customer, utilizes a three class layout which includes eight first class seats, 70 business class and 428 seats in economy. Like many of their other counterparts, the upper class cabins are located on the upper deck of the airliner.

Malaysia Airlines, China?s other A380 carrier took delivery of their first A380 this past spring. The carrier also uses a three class configuration. On the lower deck the airline has 8 first class and 350 economy seats. The upper deck has 66 fully flat reclining seats for business class and 70 economy seats.

Recently Thai Airways became the ninth airline to operate the massive jumboliner in September. The airliner has 507 seats. The upper deck is equipped with 12 first class and 60 business class. Both classes have fully flat reclining seats. The lower deck has 435 economy seats. Every seat features seat back monitors, individual power sources, wi-fi internet and mobile phone access.

Korean Air became the first of the A380 customers to make the upper deck all business class with a total of 94 sleeper seats laid out in a 2-2-2 configuration. The upper deck also has a bar and lounge section. The airline also offers an in-flight duty free store. The lower deck has 12 first class seats and 301 economy seats. Korean Air currently has the lowest number of seats for an A380 with 407 total.

Korean Air?isn?t?the first airline to dedicate a space to something other than passenger seating. Emirates is equipped with showers in their first class cabin. Australia?s Qantas has a lounge area reminiscent of the early 1970?s 747 retro lounges. The lounge is for their premium passengers. The A380s in the Air France fleet have digital lounges on the upper decks and Singapore Airlines offers a double bed feature in first class.

British Airways, which has yet to take delivery of their first A380 plans to have 12 first class seats on the main deck which will be followed by 44 of their Club World seats configured in a 2-4-2 layout and the remaining space will have 199 World Traveler seats in a 3-4-3 configuration. The upper deck layout will feature an additional 53 World Club seating in a newer 2-3-2 configuration which will be followed by 55 World Traveler Plus seating in the 2-3-2 layout. The remaining upper deck space will be occupied by 104 World Traveler seats in a 2-4-2 configuration.

More and more airlines are placing orders for the massive airliner. Future customers include, Virgin Atlantic, Etihad Airways, Qatar, Asiana and Skymark Airlines. Their future layouts will go wherever the imagination and demand take them so stay tuned.

Mom's Heartbreaking Video Goes Viral After Her Death | Radar Online

YouTube

By Debbie Emery - Radar Reporter

A dying mother's plea for help is being heard beyond the grave thanks to a video that went viral two months after she taped it and eight days after her death.

Jennifer Johnson, 30, of Cape Coral, Florida, recorded the heart-wrenching four minutes of footage in October using flashcards to tell the story of her rare heart condition, reported Fox 4 News.

PHOTOS: Celebs Who Died Young

As she fought back the tears, the mother-of-two revealed her fear of leaving behind her "heartbeats," and expressed that she was "too young," to die, while appealing for donations for serious dental work that she needed before her heart surgery could take place.

Johnson was diagnosed with a rare form of heart disease called hypertrophic obstructive cardio myopathy, which hardens the heart restricting blood flow, when she was engaged and five months pregnant with her second child. She had a pacemaker put in shortly after but months later doctors realized that one of the wires had become loose and she needed open heart surgery to fix it.

PHOTOS: A Look Back At The Celebrities We Lost In 2012

"She had a very big heart," said her husband, Robert Johnson. "She was a fighter and ready to tackle this head-on."

Jennifer was inspired by a viral YouTube video posted by Ben Breedlove, 18, who died last Christmas from the same condition but made a YouTube video with flashcards before his death that attracted 7 million views.

PHOTOS: Stars Who Died In Bizarre Ways

"She was very inspired by his story and it touched her," said her late husband, who is now left to raise their two young children, Mikayla, 3, and 18-month-old son Malykai, on his own.

The Florida mom's video raised just more than $440 which helped with the cost of the dental surgery.

She was cleared for the heart surgery on December 14 but suffered complications and died three days later.

Nonprofit tech innovators inspire new philanthropy

He wanted to add sensors to the wells to give donors more assurances about the projects. But raising millions of dollars for the innovation was a problem. Google stepped in with major funding to create and install sensors on 4,000 wells across Africa that will send back real-time data on the water flow. (AP) ? Scott Harrison knows his charity has funded nearly 7,000 clean water projects in some of the poorest areas of the world in the past six years. How many of those wells are still flowing with drinking water months or years later, though? That's a tough question to answer.

His organization called Charity: Water has funded projects in 20 different countries. It's committed to spend 100 percent of each donation in the field to help reach some of the 800 million people who don't have clean water and resort to drinking from swamps, unhealthy ponds or polluted rivers. Organizers send donors photos and GPS coordinates for each water project they pay for.

Still, Harrison, a former New York promoter for nightclubs and fashion events, didn't want to guess at how many water projects were actually working. He wanted to give donors more assurance, knowing as many as a third of hand pumps built by various governments or groups stop functioning later. His solution: why not create sensors to monitor the water flow at each well? But raising millions for a new innovation could prove impossible.

Few funders want to pay for a nonprofit's technical infrastructure or take the risk of funding a dreamy idea. They'd rather pay for real work on the ground.

This month, Google stepped in with major funding to create and install sensors on 4,000 wells across Africa by 2015 that will send back real-time data on the water flow at each site. The $5 million grant could be a game changer for Charity: Water to ensure its projects are sustainable, to raise money for maintenance and to empower developing countries to maintain their infrastructure with new data.

"You could imagine a water minister salivating over this technology, even a president of a country being able to hold his water ministers in different districts accountable, saying, 'Hey, look, I want a dashboard in my office where I can see how my small, rural water projects are performing,'" Harrison said.

The grant is part of the first class of Google's Global Impact Awards totaling $23 million to spur innovation among nonprofits. Experts say the new annual grants are a part of a growing trend in venture philanthropy from funders who see technology as an instrument for social change. Such donors say they can have a bigger impact funding nonprofits that find ways to multiply their efforts through technology.

The gifts also represent a shift in the tech company's approach to philanthropy.

Google's Director of Charitable Giving Jacquelline Fuller said the company analyzed its giving, including $115 million in grants last year. It decided it could have a greater impact by funding nonprofit tech innovation, rather than specific issue areas or existing projects. Its grants will come with volunteer consulting on each project from Google engineers or specialists.

"We're really looking for the transformational impact" from clever uses of technology, Fuller said. But that sometimes involves risk that new technologies and innovations may not work.

"Informed risk is something Google understands," she said. "There's actually very few dollars available that's truly risk capital, lenders willing to take informed risk to help back some of these new technologies and innovations that may not pan out."

The largest source of funding for U.S. nonprofits is government, mostly through contracts that come with strings attached. Individual donors contribute significant support to charities as well, and the nation's foundations give about 14 percent of overall philanthropy to nonprofits.

"There is sort of a new breed of philanthropists coming into the field," including many who made money in the tech sector at a young age, said Bradford Smith, president of the Foundation Center, an information clearinghouse on nonprofits. "There I think you're seeing a really interesting sort of confluence of almost kind of a venture, risk-taking approach and technology as an instrument for social change."

Google zeroed in on projects that could develop new technology to scale up smaller projects targeting the environment, poverty, education and gender issues.

It's giving $5 million to the World Wildlife Fund to develop high-tech sensors for wildlife tagging to detect and deter poaching of endangered species. Another $3 million is going to a project at the Smithsonian Institution to develop DNA barcoding as a tool to stop illegal trading of endangered plants or animals smuggled across borders. That project could give six developing countries DNA testing materials with fast results to use as evidence to prosecute smugglers.

To fuel future innovation, Google is giving Donorschoose.org $5 million to create 500 new Advanced Placement courses in math, science and technology for U.S. schools that are committed to enrolling girls and minority students.

The charity GiveDirectly will receive $2.4 million to expand its model of direct mobile cash transfers to poor families in Kenya as a new method for lifting people out of poverty.

A charity run by actress Geena Davis that studies gender portrayals in the media will use a $1.2 million Google grant to develop new automated software that analyzes how females are portrayed in children's media worldwide, speeding up a previously manual process.

"It was looking prohibitively expensive to do a global study," Davis said, adding that developing new technology seemed like a far-flung wish. "It seems so science future that we weren't really raising money to do it."

While the grant may be a relatively small investment for a major tech company, it represents one of the largest gifts ever for the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media.

Innovation and technology among nonprofits have long been underfunded with traditional funders often feeling averse to risk and more often seeking to fund specific types of existing programs.

Momentum has been building for the past decade for funders pursuing venture philanthropy, said Matt Bannick, managing partner of the Omidyar Network founded by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar. Since 2004, the group has given out $310 million in grants to nonprofits, including the Sunlight Foundation and DonorsChoose.

Seeking out ideas to fund, rather than existing projects, turns traditional notions of philanthropy on its head, Bannick said.

"Rather than looking for organizations that could do this specific work that we're hoping to get accomplished, let's look for fabulous entrepreneurs ... that have a new and innovative idea that we can get behind," he said.

Silicon Valley philanthropists are fueling some growth in funding for nonprofit innovators, but some older foundations also have turned to funding innovation and nonprofit entrepreneurs.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation in Miami, born from a newspaper chain, has turned its focus to media innovation. The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, founded in 1934 by a General Motors chief, focuses on science and technology to drive the nation's prosperity. Sloan was an early funder of the Smithsonian's DNA barcoding project.

Such funders are betting that early seed money can have a big impact with the right ideas and entrepreneurs.

"If there was more funding," Bannick said, "there would be a lot more great ideas that could emerge."

Visiting Optometrist For Good Eye Health | ArticleBro.com

The need for regular eye examinations cannot be underestimated, especially considering the increasing cases of eye complications among all age groups. The main reason why it is important to get one?s eyes examined regularly is that eye disorders normally do not have any visible symptoms, which makes it important to seek professional help to diagnose them. The failure to do so might result in the disease progressing beyond its early stages, which in turn makes it difficult to pursue treatment. Even though the ideal duration after which one should have an eye exam stands disputed, there is no doubt to the fact that regular eye exams are important.

A comprehensive eye exam focuses on vision testing, which is followed by vision correction with the help of eye-glasses/ contact lenses in case of disorders like near-sightedness and far-sightedness. Even though this is the most common application of an eye exam, there are several other disorders that can be diagnosed with the help of this test. Along with correcting the refractive error, an eye exam also determines whether both the eyes of the patient are working properly in coordination with each other. Eye teaming is important while performing everyday tasks, especially reading in young children, and if left undiagnosed can lead to learning disabilities.

Common disorders like amblyopia, presbyopia, and strabismus can be diagnosed through a comprehensive eye exam. Most of these disorders are easier to treat following an early diagnosis, before the symptoms progress. Apart from visual acuity, an eye exam also helps to measure other important parameters like the eye pressure, which is used to diagnose disorders like glaucoma, and even ascertain the likelihood of a particular individual developing the disease later on in life.

Interestingly, the importance of eye examinations does not just end at the diagnosis of eye disorders, but can also provide valuable information regarding the overall health of the individual. This is made possible through tests involving the examination of blood vessels in the retina, which are an integral part of every eye exam. This snapshot of blood vessels is a useful indicator about the functioning of the remaining blood vessels in the body, and can thus be used to determine the risk of the patient contracting diseases like hypertension and diabetes. While for most people getting an eye exam once in two years is enough, elderly patients, patients with diabetes, and contact lens wearers must get their eyes examined annually.

Treatment Talk ? 5 Reasons Addiction is Ruining Your Life ...

    addiction, recovery

I?m pleased to present a guest post by M. Farouk Radwan.

Most people who are addicted to a certain substance have an idea about its harmful effects but what most people don?t know is that there are other harmful side effects for addictions that many people are not aware of.

Apart from the health effects you know about there are other bad mental effects that result from addiction. And while many people forget about the physical risks when they do a bad habit still they can change their minds if they knew about the short term mental effects that these bad habits cause.

Do you know that your bad habit can be the reason for your depression, sadness or anxiety?

Read the following lines to know how your bad habits can affect you.

    How addiction ruins your life:

    1. Dopamine disturbance: when you get addicted to anything even food the levels of dopamine in your brain gets disturbed. Dopamine Is the chemical responsible for activating the reward system in the brain. The more you do your bad habit the less sensitive your brain becomes to dopamine and as a result the more boring your life becomes. Because new things rarely manage to stimulate your brain the way your bad habit does your life becomes dull, unsatisfying and boring.

    2. Low testosterone:? Testosterone is produced by both males and females. Testosterone reduces depression and prevents many of the bad moods people experience. It was found that people who occasionally drink alcohol have 20% less testosterone produced in their bodies.? As for hard core drinkers their bodies produce 40-50% less testosterone. In other words, alcohol will ruin your manhood if you are a man and your mood if you are a woman.

    3. Addiction reduces self esteem: When the dopamine levels in the brain drop as a result of addiction the person experiences more anxiety and becomes more self conscious. This leads to a reduced self esteem. Many of those who gave? up on addiction reported feeling much more confident and experienced great improvements in their social relations.

    4. Guilt will ruin your mood: Even if you think that its completely ok to do the bad habit you are doing your subconscious mind will be accumulating guilt each time you do it. After a long time of commitment to your bad habit you will start getting used to that guilt and your normal state of feeling will be a bad mood. In other words you will always be feeling bad but you will assume that that?s how you should be feeling anyway!

    5. Stress and tension: don?t try to fool yourself by believing that the health warnings you read or the values you were raised to believe in wont have an effect on your mood. Any conflict happens in the brain will result in stress. If you kept doing your bad habit even though you believe that its wrong then you will get subjected to a high level of stress which will ruin your mood as well.

    Final words

Addiction doesn?t only affect your health in a bad way but it also affects your hormone levels, state of mind and mood. Even if you believe that your addiction is totally harms you will be shocked to know about the real psychological effects it can have upon you.

Save yourself and stop your bad habits today.

Man who killed 2 firemen left note on killing plan

WEBSTER, N.Y. (AP) ? The ex-con who lured two firefighters to their deaths in a blaze of gunfire left a rambling typewritten note saying he wanted to burn down the neighborhood and "do what I like doing best, killing people," police said Tuesday as they recovered burned human remains believed to be the gunman's missing sister.

Police Chief Gerald Pickering said 62-year-old William Spengler, who served 17 years in prison for the 1980 hammer slaying of his grandmother, armed himself with a revolver, a shotgun and a military-style rifle before he set his house afire to lure first responders into a death trap before dawn on Christmas Eve.

"He was equipped to go to war, kill innocent people," Pickering said.

The rifle he had was a military-style .223-caliber semiautomatic Bushmaster rifle with flash suppression, the same make and caliber weapon used in the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., Pickering said.

The chief said police believe the firefighters were hit with shots from the rifle given the distance but the investigation was incomplete.

Pickering declined to divulge the full content of the two- to three-page note left by Spengler or say where it was found, but read one line from it: "I still have to get ready to see how much of the neighborhood I can burn down, and do what I like doing best, killing people."

The human remains were found in the charred house that Spengler shared with his 67-year-old sister, Cheryl. A medical examiner will need to determine the identity and cause of death because the body is badly burned.

Spengler killed himself as seven houses burned around him Monday on a narrow spit of land along Lake Ontario in this suburb of Rochester. A friend said Spengler hated his sister but the chief said the note left by him did not give a motive.

No other bodies were found, and police late Tuesday said the on-scene investigation had been completed.

Two firefighters were shot dead in the ambush and two others are hospitalized in stable condition.

Spengler fired at the four firefighters when they arrived shortly after 5:30 a.m. Monday to put out the fire, Pickering said. The first police officer who arrived chased the gunman and exchanged shots.

Authorities said Spengler hadn't done anything to bring himself to their attention since his parole. As a convicted felon, he wasn't allowed to possess weapons. Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley said Spengler led a very quiet life after he got out of prison.

A friend, Roger Vercruysse, lived next door to Spengler and recalled a man who doted on his mother, whose obituary suggested contributions to the West Webster Fire Department.

"He loved his mama to death," said Vercruysse, who last saw his friend about six months ago.

Vercruysse also said Spengler "couldn't stand his sister" and "stayed on one side of the house and she stayed on the other."

The West Webster Fire District learned of the fire after a report of a car and house on fire on Lake Road, on a narrow peninsula where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario, Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn said.

Emergency radio communications capture someone saying he "could see the muzzle flash coming at me" as Spengler carried out his ambush. The audio posted on the website RadioReference.com has someone reporting "firefighters are down" and saying "got to be rifle or shotgun - high powered ... semi or fully auto."

Two of the firefighters arrived on a fire engine and two in their own vehicles, Pickering said. After Spengler fired, one of the wounded men fled, but the other three couldn't because of flying gunfire.

The police officer who exchanged gunfire with Spengler "in all likelihood saved many lives," Pickering said.

The dead men were identified as police Lt. Michael Chiapperini, 43, the Webster Police Department's public information officer; and 19-year-old Tomasz Kaczowka, also a 911 dispatcher.

Pickering described Chiapperini as a "lifetime firefighter" with nearly 20 years in the department, and he called Kaczowka a "tremendous young man."

The two wounded firefighters, Joseph Hofstetter and Theodore Scardino, were in stable condition Tuesday at Strong Memorial Hospital, the chief said. Both were awake and alert and are expected to recover.

Hofstetter, also a full-timer with the Rochester Fire Department, was hit once in the pelvis, and the bullet lodged in his spine, authorities said. Scardino was hit in the chest and knee.

The shooting and fires were in a neighborhood of seasonal and year-round homes set close together across the road from the lakeshore. The area is popular with recreational boaters but is normally quiet this time of year.

At Christmas Eve Mass, pope urges space for God

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI marked Christmas Eve with Mass in St. Peter's Basilica and a pressing question: Will people find room in their hectic, technology-driven lives for children, the poor and God?

The pontiff also prayed that Israelis and Palestinians live in peace and freedom, and asked the faithful to pray for strife-torn Syria as well as Lebanon and Iraq.

The ceremony began at 10 p.m. local time Monday with the blare of trumpets, meant to symbolize Christian joy over the news of Christ's birth in Bethlehem. As midnight neared, chuch bells tolled throughout Rome, while inside the basilica, the sweet voices of the Vatican's boys' choir resounded joyously.

Christmas Eve Mass at the Vatican traditionally began at midnight, but the start time was moved up years ago so as to give the 85-year-old pontiff more time to rest before his Christmas Day speech. That address is to be delivered at midday Tuesday from the basilica's central balcony.

A smiling Benedict, dressed in gold-colored vestments, waved to photo-snapping pilgrims and applauding church-goers as he glided up the center aisle toward the ornate main altar of the cavernous basilica on a wheeled platform guided by white-gloved aides. The platform saves him energy.

In his homily, Benedict cited the Gospel account of Mary and Joseph finding no room at an inn and ending up in a stable which sheltered the baby Jesus. He urged people to reflect upon what they find time for in their busy, technology-driven lives.

"The great moral question of our attitude toward the homeless, toward refugees and migrants takes on a deeper dimension: Do we really have room for God when he seeks to enter under our roof? Do we have time and space for him?" the pope said.

"The faster we can move, the more efficient our time-saving appliances become, the less time we have. And God? The question of God never seems urgent," Benedict lamented.

The pope worried that "we are so 'full' of ourselves that there is no room left for God." He added, "that means there is no room for others either ? for children, for the poor, for the stranger."

With his voice a bit hoarse, and looking somewhat tired as the two-hour ceremony neared its end, Benedict decried that history has suffered through "misuse of religion," when belief in one God became a pretext for intolerance and violence. Still, he insisted that where God is "forgotten or even denied, there is no peace either."

"Let us pray that Israelis and Palestinians be able to live their lives in the peace of the one God and in freedom," the pope said.

Benedict also mentioned his hope for progress in Syria, which is mired in civil war, as well as Lebanon and Iraq.

Reflecting the Vatican's concern about the exodus of many fearful Christians from the Muslim-dominated Middle East, Benedict expressed hope that "Christians in those lands where our faith was born maybe be able to continue living there" and that Christians and Muslims "build up their countries side by side in God's peace."

Hours before the basilica Mass, Benedict lit a Christmas peace candle on the windowsill of his studio window overlooking St. Peter's Square.

CTA Pink Line Robberies: Chicago Police Warn Riders To Watch For Cell Phone Thieves

A spate of robberies aboard the Chicago Transit Authority Pink Line has police warning travelers to watch out.

According to a police alert issued Saturday, two men thought to be between 20 and 30-years-old have been snatching cell phones from commuters when the train stops at a station, reports the Sun-Times.

So far, a string of four robberies have been reported in the past two weeks, according to the Tribune: on Dec. 10 near the 200 block of South Kostner Avenue, Dec. 16 in the 1900 block of South Central Park Avenue, and the 2000 block of South Pulaski Road and Dec. 18 on the 1900 block of South Kedzie Avenue.

NBC Chicago reports that the alert describes the suspects as black males between 6-foot to 6-foot-2. Police were told one of the robbers was so tall his head almost touched the top of the train door.

Police ask that anyone with information about the robberies or robbers should contact Area Central Detectives at 312-747-8380.

Wintry weather could mean white Christmas in Northeast

BUFFALO, New York (Reuters) - Powerful winds and snow whipped parts of the eastern United States on Saturday, carrying the promise of a white Christmas while threatening to cause problems for the many Americans traveling for the holidays, meteorologists said.

The storm moving in from the Midwest was sending strong winds into the mid-Atlantic states and southern New England. It buried parts of Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin in more than a foot of snow earlier this week.

The high winds threatened to delay flights at busy airports in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, meteorologists said.

Due to the winds, departing flights were delayed at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey and at Washington Dulles International Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

More than 87 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more away from home over the holidays, the travel and auto group AAA has forecast. Nearly nine out of 10 will be on the roads, it said.

Residents in and around Buffalo, New York, awoke on Saturday to 4 to 6 inches of snow - the season's first significant accumulation in the notoriously snowbound region.

Typically, the area would have roughly a foot of snow by the Christmas holidays, but there has been little or nothing this year.

"There was something missing," Mayor Rob Ortt of North Tonawanda, New York, just north of Buffalo, said of judging the city's holiday lighting contest in the past week. "I think this was the first year there was no snow, not even a dusting."

"Everyone thinks of us as a place where snow is, and you relish it at Christmas time," he said, adding, "When we have snow around St. Patrick's Day, that's when people get annoyed."

The National Weather Service predicted a few more inches of snow for the Buffalo region on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

A new storm could bring snow as well to the central Appalachians, northern mid-Atlantic and southern New England on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, Accuweather.com said.

Residents of Harrisburg and Scranton, Pennsylvania eastward to Hartford, Connecticut, and Boston could expect a white Christmas, it said.

"It could be a white Christmas after all in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, New England and other areas across the nation," said Alex Sosnowski, Accuweather senior meteorologist.

New York City is likely to see a mix of snow and rain, he said.

    RELIEF FOR SKI RESORT OPERATORS

Several inches of snow fell on Saturday in parts of western Pennsylvania. In central New York, snowfall of up to an inch an hour at times was predicted by the National Weather Service.

Ski resort operators in western New York greeted the snow with relief and said the cold air was making conditions ideal for snowmaking.

"It hurts not to be open yet," said Andy Minier, ski racing coordinator at Kissing Bridge ski area, about 30 miles south of Buffalo.

On Saturday, high winds were buffeting the New York City metropolitan area, eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey, the National Weather Service said.

It predicted hazardous conditions due to winds for upstate New York, northwestern Connecticut, southern Vermont and western Massachusetts.

Wintry air blowing off the eastern Great Lakes was causing icy conditions in western and northern Pennsylvania, upstate New York and West Virginia as well, Accuweather said.

On the Gulf Coast, meteorologists say, dangerous thunderstorms and tornadoes are expected on Christmas Day.

The affected areas are likely to be southeastern Texas, central and southern Louisiana, southern Mississippi, southern Alabama and the Florida Panhandle, Accuweather said. Cities in those areas include Houston; Baton Rouge and New Orleans in Louisiana; Gulfport, Mississippi; Montgomery and Mobile in Alabama; and Pensacola, Florida; it said.

Detroit pays out nearly $500k in bonuses

    3 hrs.

Detroit is dangling at the edge of insolvency, but the city reportedly has enough funds to?pay workers nearly $500,000 in bonuses, the Detroit News reported Thursday.

The newspaper said the annual longevity bonuses, which went out last Friday to?1,148 workers, ranged from $150 to $750, depending on how long a worker had been?employed.

The city, which has fewer than 10,000 employees, eliminated longevity bonuses for?union employees three years ago, the Detroit News added. But a statement emailed to NBCNews by Mayor Dave Bing?s spokesman Anthony Neely said the majority of workers ? 697 of them ? who got the payments were union members. Neely did not immediately respond to a request for clarification or say which union or unions had members who received payments.

The City Council?s pro tempore president Gary Brown told the Detroit News, ?We need?to get to the bottom of whether it was intentional or an accident of some sort."

Bing?s statement blamed the council, with which he has clashed as the city?s fiscal crisis?deepened. ?Mayor Bing?s Administration brought the resolution to end longevity bonus?payments... to City Council twice this summer," the statement said. "City Council rejected the resolution in?July. A second attempt was approved in September.?

The Council did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In the statement, Bing also blamed ?antiquated? policymaking processes for the failure?to implement the decision to eliminate the payments. ?The length of time needed to bring?about change is often inefficient and counterproductive,? he said. ?I expect that once?the appropriate ordinance amendment is received by City Council, the longevity bonus?payments will end for non-union employees.?

Last Friday, Bing announced at a news conference that the city would lay off 400 to?500?workers over the next few months. The city is struggling to fix its troubled finances and?stave off a possible Chapter 9 bankruptcy

If Detroit can't get its financial house in order, it could become the largest U.S. city -- at?a population of 700,000 -- to file for bankruptcy protection. Earlier this year, two mid-sized California cities -- Stockton and San Bernardino -- filed for bankruptcy.
